Good Morning Year 6 and Happy Friday! Yayy we’ve made it!
Well done for working very hard yesterday to begin your elephant reports-I really enjoyed reading them!
This is our ‘published writing blog! ’
Once you have edited your writing and you are happy that you cannot improve it further, then it is time to publish it! Type up your writing onto the blog so that other people can read your wonderful writing (make sure that there are no mistakes before you send it in!)
Editing and proof reading is so important…probably even more important as the actual writing! We all make mistakes (I make a lot!) so we must take time to read through our writing again.
Once you’ve edited your writing yourself, maybe you could read it to someone in your family? When you read your work to someone else, it can help you identify mistakes. You need to sit together so you can both see the writing, you can hold the editing pen and read out your work. Your partner will then check it makes sense, check spelling and give ideas to make it better.
Make sure you read other people’s work too, it helps us all to get better to borrow ideas for each other! I can’t wait to read all your finished pieces
We can’t wait to see what you write! Good luck authors of Year 6!

Good morning Miss Gorick and Mrs Healy!
Here is my writing:
Elephants
Elephants are the largest living land animal, their height ranges from 2.7 – 3.2m tall! They are known for their large ears, tusks made of ivory and their trunks which are actually just their nose and upper lip morphed together.
Habitat
Elephants are most commonly found in savahnas , grasslands and forests- they are also often found scattered in deserts, swamps and highlands. They live in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and Africa. Their wrinkly skin and large ears help the star cool in the hot, dry weather which they roam around in.
Appearance
Elephants have long trunks, column like legs, and a huge head. Their colour varies but they usually are greyish to brown and have skimpy, coarse hair all over their bodies. Their tusks multitask in their lives, fighting, digging and foraging. Although tusks are present at birth, they fall off and are soon replaced with new ones which continue to grow larger as the grow older. Elephants can make many different sounds (up to 10 octaves actually) but they mostly communicate through low sounds called ” rumbling”.
Diet
Elephants consume a sundry of different plants for example: grasses, twigs, bishes, shrubs, fruit and tree bark. Tree bark is a main food source for elephants as it is easy to find and it contains good minerals such as calcium and roughage which helps with their digestion.
Did you know?
You can tell two species of elephants apart by their ears!
Miss, could you please tell me if there are still any mistakes in my writing??
Hi Jada! Thank you for publishing your writing 🙂
I really like how you have used subheadings accurately to increase the clarity for the reader. I’m also impressed to see that you have used parenthesis to add extra information.
T) To improve, I would add a pair of brackets into your first paragraph. Can you identify where? Also just read through and check for spelling mistakes.
Well done Jada!
Hello Miss Gorick, this is my finished piece:
Elephants
These magnificent creature are wondrous and are all around the world.
Their Diet
The normal diet of the elephant consists of grass, leaves ,bamboo and roots. They also eat crops like Bananas and sugarcanes that of which are all grown by farmers .All adult elephants eat around 300-400lbs of food everyday.
Species
There are two main types of elephants: the African elephant and the Asian elephant. All African elephants have tusks.Only some male and female Asian elephants have tusks but are very small and are hidden inside their mouths.
Habitat
The African are usually live in the Savannah Zones found in the Sahara Desert.African forest elephants live the rain forests in the west and in Central Africa. The Asian elephants are found in India,Sri Lanka, China and most of Southeast Asia.
Hello Tim-It is great to hear from you!
Thank you for publishing your work 🙂
🙂 Well done for clearly structuring your writing with subheadings and paragraphs. This increases the clarity and makes it easier for the reader to read.
T) Could you increase your introduction by perhaps introducing what the article will teach the reader?
Well done Timothy!
ELEPHANTS
Elephants are usually known for eating peanuts, being big and having a trunk. But forget what you’ve seen in cartoons! There’s much more to an elephant than just floppy ears…
Habitat
These amazing creatures ‘ habitat can vary a lot. You may see them in places from savannas, forests, and tropical regions to swamps, grasslands and deserts. Two of the main elephant kinds are the African elephants, which live in sub-saharan Africa; and Asian elephants, which live in Nepal, India and southeast Asia.
Diet
No one knows who started the rumour that elephants like peanuts, but in fact peanuts are too little of a snack for elephants. What they do eat is:
• Grasses
• Small plants
• Bushes
• Fruit
• Twigs
• Tree bark
Tree bark is especially good for elephants since it’s packed with calcium and roughage which aids digestion.
Did you know?
When underwater, elephants lift their trunks and use them as a snorkel!
Hi Laetitia! Thank you for publishing your work 🙂
I have really enjoyed reading your report as it is clearly structured with subheadings, paragraphs and bullet points.
I also like that you included the ‘Did you know?’ section as this was a fun ending for the reader!
Well done! You have shown your skill as a writer 🙂
Hey Miss Gorick, should I post my work again?
Morning Anahi 🙂 I can add your photos to the blog.
Good morning,
Here’s my finished and edited piece:
All about elephants
These 3m mammals are the largest animals on land and have trunks as strong as 5 men. If you’re wondering where these creatures live or how they simply survive, then read on.
Habitat:
Elephants are adapted to warm savannahs and grasslands. South/southeast Asia and Africa fit these conditions perfectly and although lone elephants are commonly found in zoos, they are usually found travelling in herds in the wild.
Size and looks:
These huge animals can grow to over 3m tall and can weigh up to 7000kg- the same as 6 cars! Elephants may look intimidating but they are herbivores (plant-eating animals) which means they won’t eat you but you still shouldn’t mess with them.
Diet:
As mentioned before, elephants are herbivores and will only eat plants including, grass, leaves, bark and fruit. To get the high up fruit, they will use their trunk (which has up to 40,000 muscles) and pull the branch down and elephants don’t have any natural predators but lions and tigers may hunt babies or the weak.
Facts:
.There are 3 species of elephant (African, African forest and Asian).
.Only male asian elephants grow tusks
.Elephant tusks keep growing
.Elephants can drink up to 160L a day
.They do have a good memory
.Lifespan: 50-70 years
.Gestation period: 4-5 years
.They have poor eyesight
.Excellent sense of smell and hearing

T) Just check for any missing punctuation
Well done Maryana!
Hello,
Are we supposed to do a conclusion???
Good question! Yes a short concluding sentence is useful in a report.
Good morning everyone!
Here is my writing:
Elephants are mammals of the Elephantidae family and the largest land animal. Three species are currently recognised : the African bush elephant, the African forest elephant and the Asian elephant. Read on to find out more.
Habitat
Elephants live in the wild in the parts of Africa, South Asia and South East Asia. Elephants live in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and Asia. They are found offence in savannas, grassland, and forests but they also live in deserts, swamps and mountains.
Appearance
Elephants are the largest land mammal on earth, and they are one of the unique looking animals with their characteristic long noses or trunks, their floppy ears and wide thick legs. There is no other animal with a similar physique. Elephants are grayish to brown in colour, and their body hair is sparse and coarse.
Diet
Elephants eat:
Grasses
Small plants
Bushes
Fruit
Twigs
Tree bark
And root.
But tree bark is an elephant favorite food, it contains calcium which aids their digestion.
Hi Eliza 🙂 Thank you for submitting your work-I really enjoyed reading it!

Hello Mrs Healy and Miss Gorick,
I hope everyone is okay ?
Here is my whole non-chronological report:
ELEPHANTS
Elephants are very big animals, who live in very hot climate. There are two types of elephants,African Elephants and Asian Elephants .They are very interesting creatures and are full of suprising facts. If you want to learn more about these fascinating creatures, well read on for this report will tell you all you need to know about them.
APPEARANCES
As i mentioned before Elephants are huge they can weigh up to 14000 pounds and they can be up to 13 feet large. They are land mammals with trunks, big ears and tusks.African Elephants are the largest land animals in the world! Most of the time you will see elephants in a group called a parade with calves (babies) and adults.Elephants typically have grey skin though sometimes you may see them with brown -reddish skin for they put colored mud on themselves (read on to find more about elephants and colored mud).
LIFE
Communication is vital to elephants as much as to humans for this is how they connect with each over.Elephants mostly communicate in a low octave called “rumbling”but have a wide range of sounds(10 octaves in total). They can also track how far an elephant is depending on his/her call.Though communication is important it isn’t the only vital thing in an elephants life.Elephant’s trunk is also critical for an elephant because it basically does everything:Their trunk help them to eat, drink, smell, breathe and give themselves baths.Speaking of baths elephants give themselves dirt baths for it is good for there skin and protects them from nasty insects called parasites, this is why you might see a brown-reddish colored elephant walking about. This animal is also said to be very intelligent because they have a huge brain which weighs about 13pounds(5.99kg).Furthermore they have a really good memory and can remember places they’ve been,animals/humans they’ve met/seen.
HABITAT
Elephants are found in Africa,South Asia and South East Asia. They live in places like the rainforest(Asia),savannah(Africa) and deserts (Sahara Desert).
DIET
Elephants are herbivores they eat grasses, small plants, bushes, fruit, twigs, tree bark and roots.though tree bark is their favourite food source for it contains calcium and roughage which helps with digestion. These creatures eat by grasping food with their trunks and then bringing it up to their mouths. They do the same with water; They suck it up half way through their trunk and then squirt it in their mouths.
I hope this report helped you understand and learn new things about elephant ways.

Hi Aryan! Thank you for submitting your work-it is great to read it.
You have carefully chosen your facts and information meaning your article is appealing to read and engaging for the reader.
I also like that you have included a short concluding sentence which completes your article well.
Well done Aryan! You have demonstrated a great writing ability.
Good afternoon!
Here is my report:
African elephants
————————
Common name: African elephants
Scientific name: Loxodonta africana
Type: Mammals
Diet: Herbivore
Group name: Herd/Parade
Size: Height at shoulders – 8.2 to 13 feet
Weight: 2.5 – 7 tonnes
Average life span in the wild: Up to 70 years
African elephants are the largest land animal on Earth. Although there are other species of elephant, these are the biggest and most well known.
Habitat:
The African elephant can live in a variety of habitats (like other elephants), like savannahs, grasslands and forests. They can also live in deserts, swamps and tropical+subtropical regions.
Diet:
Elephants eat roots, grasses, fruit and bark. A fully grown elephant can consume up to 300 pounds in a single day! These animals do not sleep much. Instead, they roam over great distances while foraging for the large quantities of food they need.
Herds/Parades:
Elephants are matriarchal, which means they live in female – led groups (usually the oldest and largest is the head). She is in charge of the whole herd of female elephants (cows), and their young (calves). Adult males (bulls) usually roam alone, sometimes forming loosely – associated, smaller groups (that are all – male).
Unfortunately, elephants are threatened with many things, such as the ivory trade.
Donate today to help save these wonderful creatures.
Hi Chiara 🙂 Thank you for publishing your work-I really enjoyed reading it!
You have shown skill as a writer by including technical vocabulary, a range of punctuation and parenthesis to add extra information. Your report is also well structured using subheadings and paragraphs and I like that you have included a short conclusion to end your report.
Well done Chiara!
Good afternoon Miss Gorick and Mrs Healy,
Here is my non chronological report on elephants?:
Elephants
Elephants are the largest mammals on land, they are extremely interesting! Read on to learn more about these fascinating creatures!
Habitat:
Elephants can live in subtropical and tropical areas, their habitat’s range from dry forests, savannas (such as mixed woodland and grassland mosaics), semi deserts and evergreen rainforests. Elephants can be found in Africa and Asia.
Adaptations:
Elephants have huge ears which allow them to contain lots of veins. When the elephant gets hot, more heat can escape or can be lost. Their wrinkly skin can also help them stay cool because they have more surface area to give off heat, this is the same with the ears. Asian elephants’ trunks are used in various ways, they can be used as a cooling system: their trunks can spray water onto their backs or they can spray dirt to prevent sunburn. Elephants tusks are made of ivory that can help them dig, lift objects, strip back trees to eat and defence. Elephants typically go through 6 sets of teeth in their lifetime as the trees that they eat, wear down their teeth. Elephants walk on their tiptoes, they have cushion-like pads to help support the weight of the elephant.
Did you know?
There are many unexpected facts about elephants, here are a few of the many.
• Did you know, female elephants carry their baby in them for 22 months?!
• Elephants can recognise themselves in a mirror- something very few animals are known to do?!
• Elephant’s family members show signs of grief and may revisit the bones of the deceased for years, touching them with their trunks.
• Mud baths protect elephants from the sun and clean their skin of bugs and ticks.
• Elephants can eat up to 300 pounds of food each day!
Hunted
Elephants are currently endangered and are being hunted for their ivory tusks. Every year, around 20,000 elephants are being killed. Their tusks are being used for jewellery, piano keys and decoration. These pointless things are costing many elephant’s lives. Elephants also play a vital role in the ecosystem as elephants that live in dry regions can smell water close to the surface of the ground and use their tusks to dig small waterholes. Other animals also rely on these waterholes. The large bodies of elephants help create trails through wooded areas that might otherwise be blocked.
Hi Shun! It is so good to hear from you! Thank you so much for publishing your work-I have really enjoyed reading it.

I really enjoyed reading it as it was brilliantly structured using subheadings and clear paragraphs. I also like how you have included lots of technical vocabulary and used parenthesis to add extra information-this shows maturity as a writer.
Well done Elly!
I did my report a little bit different, instead of having their diets as subheadings, I researched different types of Elephants, I hope you don’t mind!
Here’s my writing:
Elephants: All Kinds
From Dumbo to Elmer, Elephants are known from across the world. They are the largest land animal in the world and only have two main species left, African and Asian elephants. I have decided to focus on the African Bush Elephant, The Asian Elephant, and the Borneo Pygmy Elephant.
Did you know?
Adult elephants can’t jump!
African Bush Elephant
The African Bush Elephant, also known as The African Savanna Elephant and scientifically, Loxodonta Africana. It is the largest land animal, reaching 24 feet in length and 13 feet in height. This elephant can be found in most countries in Africa and can live in different habitats such as an open savanna to the desert or high rainforest. This species can weigh up to 11 tons and can live up to the age of 70 longer than most mammals except for humans. African Bush Elephants are herbivores and eat about 350 pounds of vegetation every day! African Bush Elephants are usually identified by their tusks, which both genders have. They have the largest ears then any other animal in the world.
Did you know?
A newborn elephant weighs more than 200 pounds: that’s about 30 human babies!
Borneo Pygmy Elephant
The Borneo Pygmy Elephant, scientifically known as Elephas Maximus Borneensis. These elephants are the smallest (in size) of the Asian elephants subspecies. They are baby and unusually oversized ears, plump bellies and a tail that is so long that they sometimes drag them on the ground when they walk due to their tail. DNA evidence proved these elephants were isolated for about 300,000 years ago! Over time, they became smaller with relatively larger ears and longer tails!
Asian Elephant
Did you know?
An Elephants trunk has more muscles than the whole human body!
In conclusion, the one of many things all these Elephants have in common is that they are all endangered. There are many people trying to help save Elephants and we can be one of them. ?
Hi Haleema 🙂 Thank you for submitting your work! Of course I don’t mind you choosing different subheadings as that makes it even more interesting to read!
Your use of parenthesis and technical language shows your skill as a writer and I really like that you’ve included lots of fun facts for the reader to enjoy!
Well done Haleema!
Report on Elephants
Introduction
The word elephant has Greek and Latin origins. It’s scientific genus name is “Elephas”. In Greek, elephos represents an antlered beast or stag. The word elephant in Latin is divided into two words: “ele” which means arch and “phant” which means huge. There have been two identified species of elephants living today African elephants, (Loxodonta Africana) and Asian elephants (Elephas Maximus). I will be researching and reporting on both of these elephants.
Physical characteristics
Elephants are known for their large ears, tusks made of ivory and their trunks which are actually a fusion of their nose and upper lip. Elephants are the world’s largest land animal! Male African elephants can reach 3m tall and weigh between 4,000 -7,500kg. Asian elephants are slightly smaller, reaching 2.7m tall and weighing 3,000– 6,000kg.
Habitat
Elephants live in tropical regions of Africa and Asia. They are found most often in savannas, grasslands, and forests, but they also live in deserts, swamps, and mountains.
Diet
Elephants eat grass, small plants, bushes, fruit, twigs, tree bark, and roots. Tree bark is a favourite food for elephants. It contains calcium and roughage, which aids digestion.
Reproduction
The courtship between a male and a female elephant is short lived. They will rub their bodies on each other and even wrap trunks. The females tend to run away from the males that pursue them. This game of cat and mouse can continue for a very long time before the actual mating does occur. The male elephants will fan their ears more when they are ready to mate than at other times. This allows them to get their scent out there at a wider distance than before and to attract females that can become potential mates.
Future
Only a few surviving elephant herds remain in the wild. One-third of the surviving 35,000 Asian elephants are now in captivity, and the survival of all wild herds is threatened. The combination of habitat loss and ivory poaching have made the African elephants endangered. Over the last 100 years the elephant population which was in the millions has drastically declined to approximately 400,000.
Hi Javier 🙂 Thank you for submitting your work-I really enjoyed reading your report!
🙂 Your report is well structured using paragraphs and subheadings which makes it very clear to read. I also like that you have included parenthesis to add extra information and that your last paragraph ‘looks to the future’-this makes the reader think!
Well done Javier!
Hello Miss.
I had sent in my writing on Friday. However, it seems never to have reached you? If this is the case then please get back to me.
Hi Charles, I’m sorry but I didn’t receive it. Did you email or upload it? It will be my fault-sometimes I miss things!
