Good Morning Year 6!
I hope you have all had a peaceful Easter holiday. It was certainly a unique and memorable Easter!
For our English, we’re going to be looking at different extracts of books. Extracts mean that it is not the whole book, but part of it.
Each week, we will be doing some comprehension, SPaG and writing all based on the book, just like we would do at school!
Remember how important it is to keep reading! I have recently started reading a detective story which is very exciting but a little bit scary so I don’t read it late at night!
Please keep writing on our Reading Diary Blog to share all your great stories.
Our new book is ‘The Girl Who Stole an Elephant’ by Nizrana Farook.
About the Author
Nizrana Farook was born and raised in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and the beautiful landscapes of her home country find their way into the stories she writes.
Read the blurb-what do you think?
Chaya is a thief. But does that mean she is a bad person? She certainly doesn’t think so as she steals pointless trinkets from rich and privileged people in order to buy the bare essentials for the most needy in her community.
With hindsight, breaking into the palace and taking precious jewels from the Queen’s bedside table might not be her best decision. She has unwittingly put her closest friends and family in the most serious danger and has no idea how to put things right. Could stealing an elephant really be the answer?
An exotic setting and hypnotic storytelling make Chaya’s story impossible to put down. The young characters all have their flaws but are all driven by an underlying desire for a better, fairer way of living.
Before reading:Predict. What do you think the story might be about based on the name of it. How many different ways might a girl steal an Elephant?
During reading: Write a list – the names of every new character you meet.
After reading: Which character do you think is the most important and why? Write 4-5 full sentences saying why.
Answer the questions above in your Home Learning Book
On the blog, write a few sentences telling everyone what you think about the book so far and perhaps a prediction to what may happen next.
Happy Reading 🙂

I hope you are all well and hope to see you all soon.
Thank you Miss Gorick.?
Good morning Miss.
I think what will happen next is that Chaya will go back to the palace and steal the an elephant. I think this because she knows were they will be later, and will take the chance to steal an elephant while they got ready for the pageant.
Hi Gabriel, it is great to hear from you!
Good morning Miss Horick and Mrs Healy!
I found the book full of life and adventure, the first few pages make you intrigued to read on and know more of the story! The way the narrorator describes everything makes you able to easily picture the images in your mind letting you understand the story even more.
Hi Jada 🙂 thank you for your comment. I agree, the description is very powerful!

We are introduced to Chaya who just came out of the Queen’s Bedroom with some of her precious jewels. During this time The King is having a feast and promenade with some of his guests. Chaya gets caught trying to flee the scene and breaks off in a chase, escaping after passing the Mahout and the King’s Grand Tusker, Ananda.
I think that after this, she is gonna be wanted, and lots of people will be hunting her. Then later on, she will plan to steal Ananda. Before all this will happen, she will give the stolen jewels to the poor.
Great prediction Ethan-well done!
Good morning everyone!
I think that the book is really good so far, and I cant wait to know what will happen next. It seems like a book that you cant put down. In cant wait for chapter 2!???
Hi Eliza! I’m glad that you think you will enjoy this book ?
Hello Miss Gorick and Mrs Healy,
I hope you had a nice stay-in Easter holiday! I miss everyone very much.
I can’t wait to find out why Chaya steals an elephant and if she goes on an adventure. This book is new and different to me and I can’t wait to read it.
Hi Antonia ?I did enjoy my stay-in holiday thank you although It felt quite strange!
This book is very interesting from the first five pages from the book. Nizrana Farook has described who Chaya is and what she did in the first pages and I really like how Farook described all the commotion that was happening in just a few sentences. I think she is going sneak into the festival to have a sneak peak.
Hi Elly ?thank you for your comment. Commotion is a great word to use!
This book is very entertaining I can not wait to read on and find out why Chaya steals the elephant.
Thanks for your comment Javier!

Can buy things but the guards are going to come after her.

That’s an interesting prediction Jade ?. I miss you all too!
Hello Miss Gorick ,
I am happy to study this book again because I have read it and that it was a enjoyable book .
Its a great coincedence because I read it before the holidays.
It is going to be hard for me to do a prediction
Were I have read up to is were Chaya is trying to steel preciouse stones from the Queen
I hope everyone is safe and sound in there homes???
hope we come back to school ?
Hi Paloma! What a coincidence that you have read it already!
I’ve found the extract captivating and it made me want to read on particularly at the end of the passage not knowing what will happen next. My prediction is that Chaya will give the jewels to someone in need but before that, a lot of events and misadventures will happen to her. I’m ordering the book tonight as I am so curious to know more.
Hi Anahi, that’s great to hear! That’s a good prediction ?
Great to read all your reviews of this book so far and to read all your predictions.
I like the story so far as it is suspenseful. You want to know what will happen to Chaya. There is something mysterious about her: you don’t know where she is going and why she stole the Queen’s jewels.
I think that from the title and from the story that she will try to steal an elephant. The title says it explicitly, and in the story someone is complaining that elephants are being disturbed.
