This week, P.C. Troy visited Class 6 to talk to us about staying safe on the journey home from school. He gave us lots of useful tips:
- Always remember the Green Cross Code when crossing roads: Stop, Look, Listen- then cross the road sensibly, remaining alert for approaching traffic. Avoid crossing the road in between parked cars as drivers will not be expecting you to step out onto the road. Use a pedestrian crossing or zebra crossing if there is one nearby.
- Learn the mobile number of your main carer off by heart so that you can contact your mum, dad or other responsible adult if you need to.
- Learn St Vincent’s telephone number off by heart so that you can ring the school in an emergency: 0207 6416110.
- Plan a safe route home with your parents/ carers that is well-lit during the winter and has many people around. Stick to this route so that your parents/ carers always know which route you will be taking home.
- Go straight home with no unplanned detours so that you arrive when your parents/ carers expect you to.
- Stay alert at all times. Be aware of your surroundings and the people around you.
- Don’t listen to music or talk on the ‘phone when travelling home as you will be less aware of your surroundings. If you need to make a ‘phone-call, find a safe place to stop.
- If you are travelling on a bus, choose a safe aisle-seat near to the bus-driver.
- If you feel uncomfortable or need help, ask a trustworthy adult, such as a member of the police force, London Underground staff or bus-driver.
