We are pleased that, after many years of campaigning, including an impressive petition signed by many members of the local community, Westminster City Council has appointed FM Conway to carry out the design and implementation of a new raised zebra crossing facility in Aybrook Street (near St. Vincent Street). The scheme involves building out the western footway of Aybrook Street (south of St. Vincent Street) and installing a raised zebra crossing facility to assist vulnerable road users accessing the adjacent St. Vincent Catholic Primary School.
The proposals are illustrated on the drawing above and include:
- Building out the western footway of Aybrook Street to reduce the crossing distance for pedestrians;
- Installation of a new raised (asphalt) zebra crossing facility and associated control markings;
- Converting the southern section of Aybrook Street, between Blandford Street and St. Vincent Street, to one-way northbound (matching the existing one-way operation to the north of St. Vincent Street);
- New ASP footway paving within the extents of the scheme;
- New 150mm x 300mm kerbs installed both sides of the zebra crossing facility;
- Removal of redundant street furniture; and
- Relocation of the two existing resident parking bays on the western side of Aybrook Street, further north towards Moxon Street (no loss of residential parking).
The main works commenced on site on the 23rd July and will take approximately 6 weeks to complete so the crossing should be in place by the time we return to school in September. We are so pleased that our journey to school will be safer.
