Year 5 have been working hard in the last few weeks to create their seascape collages which involved multiple processes to achieve the final result.

This is how we created our seascape collages:
First, we created the sky. Some of us created sunsets, sunrises, stormy skies, night skies and clear blue skies.
For the sea, we used different shades of blue to create a dry brushed painting on the white paper. Some of us chose to do splatter painting too. Again, all seas were different- some created calm seas and some created stormy seas.
Once these were dry, we tore the blue painted papers for the seascape collage. Once the papers were torn, we put glue on the straight line, not the torn one and began gluing at the horizon line, making our way to the bottom of the paper, creating a pattern of alternated papers as we went. The torn paper gave the effect of foamy sea waters.
With the seascapes complete and once the glue had dried, we were ready to create our long ships. Once our boat was cut out, we created shields for our ships that are unique to our tribe of Vikings. Each clan of Vikings would also have sails that were unique to their tribe. However, the sails usually had stripes. On our other piece of white paper, we cut a curve on the sides that would make our sails appear three dimensional. Then we used that curve of our sail to draw on our painted papers and create the stripes for our sails. Some of us chose to add shapes on top of these stripes to make them unique.
We cut out a mast and glued that to the back of our ship. Then we applied a line of glue to the bottom of our boat and place it under our first set of waves.
With the ship and mast glued into place, we were ready to attach our sails. To really make them look like they were blowing across the sea, we applied a thick line of glue to both the top and bottom horizontal lines of the sail. These were then held in place for about thirty seconds to really get them to stick. Some of us created a serpent’s head on the ship.
This was great fun and we took time at the end to evaluate our final pieces and reflect on what we found difficult and what we enjoyed.
