Today’s Maths Task: To continue to measure area.

Lesson: 9 and 10 Measuring the Area
Today you will continue to find the area of various 2-D shapes.
Have a look at an example with answers here:
For question 2, you would need to find the area of various sections of a 2-D rectangle. To do this what you have to do is make the connection that two of the triangular areas make one square.
As today is a continuation of finding areas of shapes, please revisit yesterday’s blog as well as the links.
Let’s take a look at this example:
These are irregular shapes but we do know how to find the area of squares and rectangles! The blue hexagon (it has six sides) is actually made of a square and a rectangle. Can you see? You can find the area of both these shapes and then add them together to find the total area.
What about the area of the green octagon? Can we find the area of two shapes and add them together? Which shapes? You could try making one rectangle out of the green octagon by moving two 2-m squares. Take your time when finding the area for the remaining shapes using either or both methods.

If you need support:
Try to see the shapes as a number of smaller areas which you can add together. All of the shapes can be divided into rectangular areas. If you have printed this (or copied the shapes into your Home Learning book), you can use a ruler to divide the shapes into rectangles. Then you can measure the length of each of the sides and label each side as you complete a measurement.
Challenge:
Can you draw a new shape with similar rectangular sections, label it with a scale and give it to someone at home to work out the area?

You do not need to print these worksheets out – you can simply using your yellow books to show your working out and write your answers. You or your parents can then mark it as you now have access to the answers
Therefore you will not be required to write your answer in the blog comments section as before. Please do comment if you need help or have any questions about the task. Also, please read each other’s comments and help each other out if you can! It is important we stay in touch and talk to each other about maths using mathematical language just like we did in the classroom 🙂

Hi,
Today, for the challenge, I drew an irregular shape made of triangles and rectangles. There was an area of 54cm2 and my mum worked it out in 1 minute 58 seconds (it was really hard).
