This term, Class 1 have been introduced to the sensory evaluation of food as part of our D&T project related to our topic of Keeping Healthy. In groups, they have been designing a fruit salad to a specification that they have researched and developed themselves.
They have worked with their team to try, taste and sample different fruits. They then considered ways of improving the taste and appearance of their fruit salads through different methods of preparation and using additional ingredients. They have been very busy working with their team to create a specification for their fruit salad and also learning about health and safety issues when handling and tasting food.
We had so much fun making our final fruit salads with the parents. Some children changed their specification to improve the appearance or taste of their fruit salad.
There was a lot of fruit left over so Mrs Kidd kindly made smoothies for us in the afternoon!
The children evaluated their fruit salads and thought about what they would change.
Here are some of our evaluations:
“I would change banana to mango.” – Patrick
“I would love to use oranges next time because there was a lot of red in my salad.” – Elsa
“If I could do it again, I would cut the apples into smaller pieces.” – Diana
“I would change the plums because they were slimy and I would have used grapes instead.” – Ava
“I should not have used bananas because they were too soft. I should have used grapes instead.” – Regan
“Next time, I would peel the orange before putting it in my salad. I had to take it out and peel it because nobody wanted to eat it with the skin on.” – Marco
“I would not change anything. I was happy with the way my fruit salad turned out.”- Sarah
Thank you to all the parents and carers who came to our Creativity Morning today.
We really enjoyed having you there!
Here are some photos taken over the last few weeks:
(Can you guess why nobody chose to have lemon or lime in their salad?)
