*Please see pink comments below from Miss Carruthers, these Maths No Problem questions use ratio (rather than volume) so there is extra help below. I would recommend doing the challenge questions first and then Maths No Problem if you feel up to it *

Workbook: 5B
Chapter: 13 Volume
Lesson: 9 and 10 Solving Word Problems Involving Volume

Good morning, Year 5

Today you will be using your knowledge of volume to solve word problems!

Have a  look at this word problem (click to enlarge) and try to identify the key information. Can you draw a bar model or diagram to show the problem?

I would say that the first bit of important information is: 3 times as much mango juice as lime juice. If you have printed this blog, you can cross out parts of the question as you complete them.

The next bit of information I would look at is: In the end there was 9 times more mango juice than lime juice.

This is how they would look like as bar models:

The bar model helps us to answer: How many units are equal to 270 ml? 3 units? To find 1 unit: (270 ÷ 3 = 90, so 1 unit = 90 ml.

This helps us find out how much mango juice there was to begin with! (12)

So 12 × 90 ml = 1080 ml. Can we write this in litres and millilitres? How many millilitres are there in 1 litre?

SUPPORT: Remind yourself of the unit conversions here: Converting Units. Have a go at the MNP ‘Guided Practice’ to increase your confidence before you attempt the worksheets.

CHALLENGE: Try these Challenge cards here: volume word problem challenge cards

Try one of these great problems to do with volume.

If you finish this activity and would like to learn more maths, please head over to our Home Learning page and scroll down to ‘Maths’ to find more websites you can enjoy.

Marking your answers
As you and your parents now have access to Maths No Problem, I will continue to set daily worksheets for you to complete at home. They may be worksheets that you may have already attempted in class but that’s okay! It’s important that you revise and practise your skills. More information about how to log in to Maths No Problem can be found here.
You do not need to print these worksheets out – you can simply using your yellow books to show your working out and write your answers. You or your parents can then mark it as you now have access to the answers

Therefore you will not be required to write your answer in the blog comments section as before. Please do comment if you need help or have any questions about the task. Also, please read each other’s comments and help each other out if you can! It is important we stay in touch and talk to each other about maths using mathematical language just like we did in the classroom.

As it is Wednesday, Miss Coleman and Miss Carruthers will kindly be responding to the blog.

Good luck!

*The Maths No Problem pages are quite tricky, and involve using ratio rather than focussing on your volume knowledge. Please have a go at the Challenge FIRST, and then have a go at the MNP if you feel up to it. I have drawn out my working below to try and help, and there are some explanations in the comments.*

Miss Carruthers’ Maths for the Guided Practise.

Miss Carruthers’ worked through example for the first question of Worksheet 9

For Question 1 (please forgive my awful drawings of a jug and a cup!)

  • Draw out each box to help you at the start, even though you don’t know what they stand for – they help you picture the problem.
  • As you read each sentence in the question, draw what it says.
  • Read through the question at the same time as looking at my drawings and see if that makes sense.

Don’t worry if it is too confusing, it is ratio which you will cover again properly later!

Good luck!

    Morning Yr 5!
Good luck with solving the maths word problems today!

  2. Sebastiao says:

We have worked the answer out on Worksheet 9 but this is EXTREMELY HARD!!

  3. Miss Carruthers says:

Well done for persevering! Do you have any advice or tips for the rest of your class to help them?

  4. Miss, I don’t understand this even when I have seen the answers. I have looked at the explanation above again and I do not understand that either.

  5. Miss Carruthers says:

Which question are you finding hard Regan? Let me know and then I’ll see if I can help!

  6. Miss Carruthers says:

Did you have another go Regan once you had seen my example of how to work it out? Let me know how you get on?

  7. Yeah, Regan me too. I saw the Amira question and the answers and I have no idea where they got the six from..
    ?
    Nika

  8. Yes these pages are really hard to work out so I am going to do them later with my parents ?

  9. I think so too Miss. It is very hard. Can you please send a video link with a clearer explanation. Thank you

  10. Miss Carruthers says:

    Hi Ayako
I have tried to explain it in the blog above – have a look at my workings out and see if that helps.
If you are still confused, then don’t worry, have a go at the challenge as that uses your volume knowledge rather than ratio.

  11. Hello everyone! I did these worksheets and found them REALLY HARD!!

I needed quite a bit of help from my sister and she explained it to me!

I hope you all have a nice day!

    Kayla 😀 😀 😀

  12. Miss Carruthers says:

Okay, so I have had a go at the Guided Practise (you can see my drawings in the blog above!)

I drew out the bar model of before, showing that there was 3 times as much of the purple compared to the orange. When I added 550ml to each one and then re-read the question, it said that there was twice as much in the purple compared to the orange. This must mean that each box is worth 550ml.

I will have a go at the worksheet question as well so that I can give you another modelled example – hopefully that will help!

  13. Thank you Miss Caruthers.

  14. Hello everyone! I hope that you have had a great day so far.
I am struggling with the Amira question- it is really hard for me.
    Can somebody help me please?

    Thanks,

    ~ Nika ?

  15. Miss Carruthers says:

For question 2, the one with Amira, I did a bit of trial and error.

I knew that the tank was 4 times the bucket, but I needed more than one box to represent the bucket because I was taking something away. So, I did 8 boxes for the tank and 2 for the bucket.
    – – – – – – – –
    – –
But, when I made each box 900ml and tried to take that away from each, that left 7 boxes for the tank and 1 for the bucket. This couldn’t be correct as the question says the tank should be 10 times the bucket.
So I tried 12 boxes for the tank and 3 for the bucket.
    – – – – – – – – – – – –
    – – –
If I make 2 boxes equal 900ml, then I’ll be left with 10 boxes for the tank and 1 for the bucket.
Now see if you can use this to work out how much water was there in the full tank.
Remember the tank has 12 boxes, and 2 boxes =900ml.

  16. I found number 2 and 4 on worksheet 1 very hard. I also struggled with number 2 on the second worksheet. I have looked at the answers but I still don’t understand them.

  17. Miss Carruthers says:

Hi Theo. Have a look at my reply to Nika for help with question 2 (hopefully my dashes are helpful, they are meant to be the boxes!!)

For question four, draw out the boxes to start: A has 4 and B has 1. However, you need to take 234ml away from B, which you can’t do if there is only one box. So multiply the boxes by two:
    – – – – – – – – A has 8 boxes
    – – B has 2 boxes
There is still four times as many in A compared to B.
If you make one of the boxes in B 234ml, you can move it up to A.
Now A has 9 boxes and B has 1. This is correct as the question says A has 9 times as much as B.
See if you can use this to work out how much A had at the beginning (8 boxes).

  18. Hello everyone,
I struggled with maths no problem and still can’t work them out but enjoyed working out different combinations of volumes for the challenge.
    Maia?

  19. Miss Carruthers says:

Well done for having a go at the Challenges instead!

  20. Hi Miss Carruthers! Thank you for trying to help me. I am still struggling though..☹️?
Would it be ok if you send a picture like you did for the other questions.

    Thanks,

    Nika

  21. Hello everyone! I am back! I worked out the Amira puzzle and it only took me 20 minuets. The puzzle wasn’t too hard. I will try sending a picture to the Homework Upholder. So that people can see it and work out how I got the answer.

    Have a lovely day!!!

    ~ Nika ???

  22. Miss Carruthers says:

Yay! Well done Nika! I’m so proud of you for persevering and completing the question! Definitely send in your working out and I’ll post it next to mine so others can use it to solve the question.

  23. Hi Miss Carruthers,
I decided to keep trying and now I understand it. My tip is to start with worksheet 10 as it is easier than worksheet 9.

  24. Miss Carruthers says:

Brilliant Regan! Well done for not giving up when it was tricky. That’s so bizarre that worksheet 10 is easier than 9, but I’m glad it helped you to work it out. Great work!

  25. Hello! Miss Carruthers, I can not find the homework upholder so I can not send a picture.
    ????

    Thanks,
    Nika???

  26. Miss Carruthers says:

Thanks for sharing your working out Nika!

  27. Hello everyone
I have completed worksheet 10 too.
    Have a good day!
    Erin

  28. Miss Carruthers says:

Brilliant work Erin – well done!

  29. mathilde says:

I found this very hard but me an my dad figured this out

  30. Miss Carruthers says:

Well done for working with your dad. It was a particularly hard task so don’t worry too much!

  31. Hi Everyone

At the moment I am doing Amira question it is very hard I’m doing it with my parents and I’m struggling and I can’t really get the answer it is very difficult me and my parents do not understand it.

I hope you all have a fantastic day

    ~Elena ??

  32. Miss Carruthers says:

Hi Elena, I think everyone has found this particularly hard (as you can see). Have a look through the comments to see if any of the advice helps you. If you still aren’t sure, let me know and then I’ll draw out my working out to help you see the process.
