The phonic sounds we are going to practice in the next few week are spelled in many different ways in English. For example, the ‘igh’ sound is spelled differently in these words; high, life, silent, design, by and tie. Children will encounter these different spellings when reading books.
In Phonics however, we are focussing on reading and writing using these phonemes; ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, at, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure and er.
This is because this helps early writers to sound out, read and write words and simple sentences in ways which match their spoken sounds, without support from an adult, which is the goal for the end of Reception Class. We aim for all children to become ‘phonetically fearless’ and to enjoy their reading and writing. The ‘correct’ spellings come later, when the child is a more confident writer. Therefore, please don’t correct spellings if the way that they are written matches the phonic sound that they have learned and can be read by your child and others. Maya did very well with her writing. We’ll send a picture. She wrote the sentence ‘The light in the night’. She found it difficult to come up with an ‘igh’ sound but she managed to think of ‘buy’ and ‘nigh’.

Marcus did well with his reading and writing today. He enjoyed thinking up sentences and was pleased that he made one with 3 “igh” words in it.
He also wanted to say (I’m not forcing him to!) that he’s not really bored although he says in his sentence that he is, it’s just because he thought it was a good way to use “sighing”! We’ve sent a photo..

Florence is writing her sentences independently but she does often miss quite a few sounds in the words. Should I be sounding them out for her?

I would let her write them independently first. Then choose two or three words with letters missing for you to sound out and write together underneath.
