The phonic sounds we are going to practice in the next few weeks, are spelled in many different ways in English. For example, the ‘oa’ sound is spelled differently in these words; boat, hotel, rose, mow, toe, although and go. Children will encounter these different spellings when reading books.
In Phonics however, we are focussing on reading and writing using these phonemes; ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, at, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure and er.
This is because this helps early writers to sound out, read and write words and simple sentences in ways which match their spoken sounds, without support from an adult, which is the goal for the end of Reception Class. We aim for all children to become ‘phonetically fearless’ and to enjoy their reading and writing. The ‘correct’ spellings come later, when the child is a more confident writer. Therefore, please don’t correct spellings if the way that they are written matches the phonic sound that they have learned and can be read by your child and others. We read all the words and we wrote down the name for each picture. We also came up with the sentence little red was wearing his red coat.

Marcus was happy doing the reading and writing today. He loved thinking up sentences about his Thomas the Tank Engine trains but used his own “oa” words rather than the pictures, oops!
