Good morning Year 1!
Today we are going to do some History.
We are going to do some research on L.S Lowry.
Lowry was an artist who painted lots of pictures of towns and cities. The people he painted were called ‘matchstick men.’ Lowry also painted pictures of the sea because he liked it just as much as he liked the city. He once said, “Some people like to go to the theatre, some like to watch television. I just like watching ships.”
1. What are the differences between the sea and the town pictures?
2. Please do some research on Lowry.
Remember when you are researching to use the website links that I give you. These have been checked by me.

All about Lowry
Hello Miss Travers,
The differences are the city has lots of buildings that are very high, there are more people and it is very crowded, it looks cold because smoke is coming from the chimneys. The air does not look clean and it has lots of pollution. The seaside looks calmer, it looks nicer than the city. It looks beautiful because the sea and the sand is lovely. The air is fresh.
Some facts about L.S. Lowry:
He left school at 16 and work as a clerk in an accountants.
He spent most of his life working as a rent collector and painted in the evenings. He was never a full time artist.
He took evening classes in painting and drawing from Adolphe Valette. He learned lots from him.
He used just 5 colours.
He was a firewatcher in the second world war in Manchester. His pictures were happier after this.
He loved football.
He was fascinated by the sea and loved to paint it like cities.
He turned down a knighthood.
His favourite artist was Dante Gabriel Rossetti.

In the town pictures Mr Lowry used dark colours. There were lots of buildings with tall chimneys with smoke coming out into the sky they may be factories. This is pollution which I learnt in the Green team might make you sick.
In the seaside pictures there are lighter colours and fewer buildings. On one of them there is a lighthouse and the paint is not smooth, like a rough texture.

He loved football and supported Manchester City and he painted a picture called The Football Match. He turned down a knighthood
.
He did not paint many pictures of London, but one called Piccadilly Circus sold for £5 million.
His people were called matchstick men. I listened to the song which was written about him by 2 men playing guitars.

Good morning Miss Travers,
L.S Lowry was a English painter who lived in the 20th century. He is very well known for painting industrial landscapes and the people he painted were called “matchstick men”. There was a large exhibition at the Tate just a few months before I was born. He spent almost 40 years of his life in Salford in Northern England, a few miles away from Manchester. Lowry holds the record for rejecting the most number of British honours, including a knighthood. Lowry is also my mum’s favourite English painter!
