Hello Class 4!

Last week we began our new Science topic on Living Things and Their Habitats.

Do you remember the 7 characteristics of a living thing? I’ll give you a clue…

Task 1:

Can you remember each of the characteristics? Write them on the blog or in your yellow Home Learning Book (or as many as you can remember).

Today we are thinking about animal habitats. A habitat is a home environment for plants and animals or other organisms (that’s a fancy word for living things).

Task 2:

Look at the habitats below. Can you predict which organisms may live here and why?

Try to write your prediction in detail and give reasons for your ideas. You can write it in your book or on the blog!

There are a huge variety of habitats. Plants and animals have adapted in different ways to survive in their environment.
Watch this clip to see even more:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/z2bygk7

Task 3:

Today’s lesson is all about the habitats in our local area and the wildlife we may see because of these. If you are lucky enough to have a garden or outdoor area or be able to go outside, have a look at the habitats around you. Maybe there are some right on your doorstep or in your local park. look around and see what wildlife you can spot. It could be birds flying up high or tiny insects on the ground or in a plant pot! If you can’t go outside, do not worry! You can either think about what wildlife you have seen in your local area before or watch this video about a natural habitat:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zytxpv4

Think about what the organism is, where you found it (or where it is usually found) and what it looks like.
You could print this table or copy it into your yellow Home Learning book. Or draw a detailed picture of one thing you saw and label it.

Challenge:
How do you think the organisms you have described have adapted to suit their environment?

Send in a photo of your work and I will post it on the blog for all of your classmates to see!

Please ask if you have any questions! I look forward to reading your predictions and seeing your work about our local wildlife!

  6. Miss Lee says:

Well done Albert! You remembered all seven characteristics!
For task two, think about which animals may live in those pictures. A living thing would need all seven characteristics.

  7. TASK 2.
Picture one. Safari animals because their bodies are made for the hot weather.
Picture two. Polar bears and penguins because their bodies are made for the cold weather.
Picture three. Hedgehogs and bugs because that is where most food is and hedgehogs need to hibernate in the winter so they get some berries and some bugs, go to burrow.

    4) Nutrition
    5)Excretion
    6) reproduction
    7) Germination

    Task 2:
Photo 1: I think lions live there because it is a warm habitat and there is open space for them to run around. There also might be giraffes because they live in hot places. There can also be cheetas because they run around in the open

Photo 2: I think that penguins live there because they slide on ice and it is cold. There also can be polar bears because they have fur that is made for the cold weather. Seals also live in very cold places because they have blubber that keeps them warm.

  22. Miss Lee says:

Great work Pablo! Just check number 7, G is for something different. Think about all living things!

-Lion because there is lots of high grass so its easier to hunt.

-Cheetah because its wide so it can run to catch food without having to deal with things in its way.

-Hyena because sometimes dead animals from other animals aren’t finished.

-Buffalo because there is very high grass for food.

-Gazelle because its wide so it can runaway easier.

-Giraffe because it can go to a place with trees and disguise because of its pattern on its skin.

-Hippopotamus it can hide in a lake in the safari.

    -Tiger it has high grass.

-crocodile when animals go to drink water it can grab them

  30. Miss Lee says:

    Super!

  31. (T1) Movement
    Reproduction
    Sensitivity

    Nutrition
    Excretion
    Respiration
    Growth
    (T2) – Camel and lizards,wombats.
    – polo bears, seals ,penguins, big blue whales and snow foxes.
    – beetles, snakes, bugs ,spiders, ants, ladybirds, worms, caterpillars and cockroaches.
(T3) – I see ants in walks near dead trunks or piles of leaves. Some were pretty big for the size of an ant. Some were kind of small and we got bitten by some.
Sometimes we see foxes in bushes. My hypothesis is that they wait there till night falls to hunt for food. There habitat is the park.
I see pigeons on the roads sometimes. They just take a walk like we do in there gigantic house. There habitat is the streets .

  32. Miss Lee says:

Well done Stella! You have remembered all 7 characteristics!
Great work on the other tasks! Ohh I think you’re right about the foxes waiting until nightfall so that they can look for food!
Yes there are a lot of pigeons in London, often walking on the street and sometimes flying, looking to find their next meal!

  33. Task 1:
    1)Sensitivity
    2)Respiration
    3)Nutrition
    4)Movement
    5)Growth
    6)Excretion
    7)Reproduction

    Task 2:
In the first picture I think that the animals living there should be able to cope with dry conditions, as there does not seem to be much water. In the second image I think that the animals that live there must be able to adapt to a cold environment. In the third picture I think that the creatures that live there have to be able to hunt for prey. They also have to be able to avoid being eaten themselves by another animal.

    Task 3:
    Done in home learning book.

  34. Miss Lee says:

Great work Clara! You have remembered all of the 7 characteristics!
Good ideas about task 2! Yes some animals must try to avoid their predators!

  35. 1)
I remembered Movement, Nutrition, Excretion, Reproduction and Growth but I had to check again for Respiration and Sensitivity.

    2)
First image- cheetah, kangaroo, insects ?…
    Second image- penguins ? , polar bears…
Third image- ants and bugs ?

    3)
I have sent an image to the school

  36. Miss Lee says:

That’s ok, at least you know them now! Well done for checking to make sure you had all 7 of them!
Great work, I love the piece you sent in! I hope the ladybird returns to your balcony again soon… maybe when the weather is nice and sunny again!

  37. Task 1:
    Movement
    Reproduction
    Sensitivity
    Nutrition
    Excretion
    Respiration
    Growth
(I had to check for the right words for excretion and respiration)

    ?—————————————————————————?

    Task 2:
    Picture 1:
This looks like it is a pretty dry habitat, perhaps in Africa or Australia.
I imagine the sort of animals that would live in this sort of habitat in Africa would be lions, giraffes, hyenas, meerkats, and perhaps some African elephants. All of these animals like there to be some water somewhere near by too though, and as there is some grass growing (it isn’t a desert) I imagine that perhaps there is a waterhole somewhere.
In Australia, I imagine there would be kangaroos, wallabies, other ground dwelling marsupials (animals who have pouches), large lizards, snakes, insects (such as ants and spiders), if there is a body of water anywhere nearby there may also be crocodiles.

    Picture 2:
This looks like it could be part of the Arctic. I imagine the animals that would like to live here would be polar bears, penguins, seals (usually looking for penguins to eat!), and walruses.

    Picture 3:
This looks like something built in someone’s back garden to make a home for insects. I imagine that ants, maybe spiders, earthworms, snails, and perhaps some grasshoppers would live here.

    ?—————————————————————————?

    Task 3:
I am making a page that I will send through to you by email as soon as it is finished. It is night time here, so there are not many things around when I have had a look outside. I have included something about the sort of animals I would find here if it was during the day or at dusk ?. One night last week when I was leaving my uncle’s house there was a big carpet snake that had fallen from a tree in his neighbour’s front yard. Unfortunately I didn’t get a photo (it was really big and a bit scary), but I am looking for picture of one on the internet. I am also searching for a photo of me with a kangaroo and a koala.

  38. Miss Lee says:

    Hello Lucy!
I am so impressed with the amount of detail you have given in your answers! Well done!
Oh my goodness, I would definitely be scared too if I saw a big snake!
Thank you for sending in the photos of you with the kangaroo and koala, can I share them on this blog? It is very fascinating to hear of all the wildlife you can see in Australia that we don’t have here in England!

  39. (1)
Here’s what I remember Movement, Nutrition, Excretion, Reproduction and Grouth.
    (2)
First image – cheetah, kangaroo, lion, spiders.
Second image – polabears, penguin’s, seals.
Third image – ants, worms, slugs and beatles
    (3)
I see worms near dead tree logs or piles of leaves. Some were pretty big for a size for a worm some were kind of small and we even got pitten by some. Sometimes we see baby foxes in the pushes my hypothesis they wait till dark to hunt food. There happitat is the park.

  40. Miss Lee says:

Hi Ciana, well done for remembering 5 of the 7 characteristics or living things! Can you look at your friends’ comments to find out the missing 2?
Great predictions for task 2, for the first habitat, I didn’t think of spiders but there may well be some living there!

  41. Task 1
    1. Movement
    2. Reproduction
    3. Sensitivity
    4. Nutrition
    5. Exertion
    6. Respiration
    7. Growth
    Task 2
Image 1- cheetahs, lions, insects, kangaroos and others.
Image 2- penguins, polar bear and fish.
    Image 3- ants, worms, bugs.

    Task 3
When I went to the park, I saw ducks by the pond, some butterflies, and some insects on leaves ? like Beatles, ants and lots more! Most I saw were pigeons ?.

  42. Miss Lee says:

Well done Clare! Did remembering MRS NERG help you to remember the 7 characteristics of living things?
Good predictions for task 2! It’s interesting how different animals adapt to different environments so well!
How lovely to have seen some ducks at the pond and some butterflies!

  43. Hello Miss Lee,?

    Task1
    Movement
    Reproduce
    Sentivity
    Nutrition
    Excretion
    Respiration
    Growth

    Task2
Savannah= Animals live in the savannah because it has warm climate☀️. Lions?, Cheetahs?, Jackals? and Hyenas live there life in the Savannah, because it has a great amount of food.
Elephants?, Giraffes, zebra, and antalope? live in the Savannah because it has enough food for them to eat, although it is hard to find water and it floods once a year.

Antartica and North pole=Very few animals live in Antarctica and the North Pole because it is very cold. Animals like the Artic wolves and Polar bears have to live in the North Pole because they have very thick coats. Penguins? live in Antartica because there is lots of fish?.

Soil=In soil, lots of bugs are roaming around in the ground like ants?, spiders?and snails?. They live under ground for there own safety and it is possible to get food.

  44. Miss Lee says:

So much detail Mayowa, super work!
Well done for doing the challenge and thinking about how these different organisms have adapted to live in these environments. Some fantastic sentences, well done!

  45. Hi Miss Lee!
I’ve done this task in my yellow book!

  46. Miss Lee says:

    Great, well done!

  47. Task 1
    respiration
    nutrition
    reproduction
    movement
    excretion
    growth
    sensitivity

    Task 2
Pic 1. It looks like Africa or Australia so we can think about Lions, Tigers, Antilopes, Kangaroos, Elephants, Hyenas, Buffalo, Girafes, …
Pic 2. It looks like North Pole, so there should be Polar Bears, Penguins, Fish, Morses.
Pic 3. It looks like a garden in tempered region, so there should be Snails, Bugs, Butterflies, Ants, Flies, Slugs, Bees…

    Task 3
We have a small garden but still be could see lots of wildlife like birds, ants… we attach pictures
    I will send photos

  48. Miss Lee says:

    Good work Martin!
I have just tried to open the file you sent of your Science work and it said file empty! Please could you try and send it again? Thank you!
I received the photo of the snail but not the second one!

  49. I would love it if you put the photos of me on the blog!

  50. Raimundo says:

    The 7 characters are
    1.nutrition
    2. Respiration
