Hello Class 4!

How are you today? We are very lucky with this beautiful weather we are having!

Today I am at school so I won’t be able to approve and reply to your comments as often but do not worry I will check them when I can and once I am home I will check them all again! Well done for continuing to work on the blogs every day! You are doing so well and I am SO proud of you all!

Today’s lesson is geography! Try to think back to our previous geography lesson about building a shelter on an island (if you can’t remember click here). We are going to continue this learning…

So, you have found yourself deserted on an island! You managed to make yourself an impressive shelter using resources that you found on the island…

However, you have still not been rescued so you are starting to look for ways to enhance your way of life until you are rescued. You decide to look for a power source on the island. Now I don’t mean there will be a plug socket waiting for you to plug in your iPad so that you can play games! You can use RENEWABLE ENERGY…

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zp22pv4/articles/ztxwqty

Look at the table of different types of energy that you may be able to find/create on the island.

Task 1:

Write which renewable energy you will use on the deserted island and explain why you have made that choice. Then explain what you might use the energy source for.

Task 2:

Next, write a paragraph explaining whether you think renewable or non-renewable energy is best.
You need to explain the impact of both types of energy on the environment and also give reasons for your thoughts, making sure you explain them clearly.
You might want to look at the link below for more information but also use what you have seen in the video links above.

I can’t wait to read your work!

Please ask if you have any questions!

From Miss Lee 🙂

  1. Task 1
Wind power is very efficient, and a single wind turbine has the power of approximately 1000 solar panels. It has much smaller impact on the environment compared to burning fossil fuels and it can create electricity that can last for 20-25 years.

  2. Miss Lee says:

Hi Emilie, yes you are right, wind power is very efficient. What would you use it for on the island?

  3. Hello miss lee. How are you doing today? Here is my work…

    Wind energy- to have light.
    Geothermal energy- to keep warm.

I think renewable energy is better because it prevents global warming and helps the environment. You can use it again and again and it is using natural resources.

  4. Miss Lee says:

Hello Holly! I am doing great thank you for asking! How are you?
Great ideas and yes, it would be important to have light and to keep warm on a deserted island in order to survive but also it may get dark very early on the island!
How does renewable energy prevent global warming?

  5. Task 1:

I would use biomass (biofuel) because there are many plants on the island and lots of wood. It is possible that sugar can be found amongst these plants. If not, there will certainly be wood which can be burnt for fuel. There will also be rotting plant and animal material which can produce methane gas.

    Task 2:

I think that renewable energy is better as it does not produce harmful gases that hurt the environment. For example, when coal and oil are burned, they release particles that can pollute the air, water, and land.

Non-renewable energy comes from sources that will run out or will not be replenished for thousands or even millions of years. This means that at some point these sources of energy will run out and there will be nothing left to use. Renewable energy will not run out as there will always be sunshine, wind and rain.

  6. Miss Lee says:

Well done Sophie, you have thought of all possibilities for using biofuel which means if one method was unsuccessful you would have a back up!
You have explained your ideas in Task 2 in detail and your reasons are clear. Great work!

  7. TASK1
Biomass is the energy I will use because I can use that for fuel to try and get away in a boat maybe.
    TASK 2
Non Renewable energy is the best because it last more longer so if you have a lot you will get somewhere on a boat.Coal

  8. Miss Lee says:

Great idea! Why wait for rescue when you can escape on your own?!
Why does non-renewable energy last longer?

  9. Task 1
I would use wind power and build a small windmill that I could use for powering tools that would make it easier to build things.

    Task 2
Renewable energy is best because it doesn’t send harmful gasses like non_renewable, which are bad for our environment and contribute to global warming killing animals and plants and making it hard for people to breathe.

Renewable energy also lasts forever, while non renewable energy is limited.

  10. Miss Lee says:

Smart thinking! Powering tools would make life on a desert island much easier! You may even get some free time to relax!
How do non-renewable energy resources contribute to global warming?

  11. Amarissa says:

    Hi miss??
You can pick solar energy because you can we warm and not freeze to death ? and you can pick hydro electric energy because you can always cool down ??

  12. Yes, but where do you get your solar panels?

  13. Miss Lee says:

    Hi Amarissa!
What a great idea… it sounds like your deserted island has turned into a luxury island! I might have to visit!

  14. Miss Lee says:

A great point Vincent! Which other energy source could be used instead?

  15. amarissa says:

    hello miss lee
did you know, that,The island of Ta’u in American Samoa, more than 4,000 miles from the United States’ West Coast, now hosts a solar power and battery storage-enabled microgrid that can supply nearly 100 per cent of the island’s power needs from renewable energy.

  16. I would use hydroelectric energy because there is a waterfall, meaning that there is fast flowing water.

Renewable energy V.S non renewable energy

    Renewable energy
pros: It never runs out and doesn’t give off greenhouse gases, meaning it saves the lives of many animals.
Con: It is much harder to make

    Non renewable energy
Pros: It creates lots of energy and is easy to make, meaning that it is very efficient.
    Con: It creates greenhouse gases.

Verdict: If you have loads of it’s sources, renewable energy is best but if not, non renewable energy tops the leaderboard.

  17. Miss Lee says:

Amarissa, I think because you have replied to another comment mine won’t appear directly under yours but thank you for sharing that interesting fact! Did you do some research and find it out today or was it something you already knew?

  18. amarissa says:

the island I am stranded on is called Ta’ū.
For example, the island of Ta’ū, located in American Samoa, is being powered almost entirely via solar energy. That’s right: An entire island is nearly powered by green energy.

  19. Paolo ??? says:

I am planning to grow coconut trees, sugar cane and bamboo. As they will need water I will create a windmill made out of wood that will help irrigation, getting water from a well. This is clean, fresh water that I can also drink and use to develop a small farm and breed animals like chickens ?. I love eggs!
I want to devise a system for making hot water using my lava pond, so that I can have warm water at home for a good bath.
With a windmill or a watermill I would create a way to beat the bamboo and try and make paper.

  20. Miss Lee says:

Wow! It sounds like you are planning on staying on your island for a long time! Perhaps you are enjoying it there? I bet it is quite relaxing to hear the sound of the crashing waves in the distance! Such inventive ideas! Another island I would definitely like to visit!

  21. Task 1:
On a deserted island, I will use Wind Energy because I will build a windmill made of wood, I can make bamboo sticks and weeds.

  22. Miss Lee says:

What would you use the bamboo sticks and weeds for?

  23. Task 2:
I choose Renewable energy because solar power we can use for the plants, wind power we can use also for the plants, Biomass we can for bioproducts, Geothermal, Ocean(waves power), Hydropower (plants)

  24. Miss Lee says:

We can use renewable energy to do things we do every day, such as turning on lights, charging electronic devices, cooking and heating up water to shower.
Why do you choose renewable energy over non-renewable energy?

  25. TASK 1
I would use wind power to build a small windmill that could energise tools and it would make it easier to build things.
    TASK 2
Renewbal energy I’d the best because it is less harmless than non renewable energy, which are bad for our environment contribut to global warming but if that dose happen it will kill plants and animals making it hard for people to breath.

Renewbal energy last forever but non renewable as a time limit.

  26. Miss Lee says:

Great ideas Ciana! Powering tools is a good idea as then you can collect food more easily (such as coconuts which are very high up) and build a more sustainable shelter for you to sleep in!
Well done for explaining your thoughts in Task 2 clearly!

  27. Task 1
I chose wind. I made this choice because I can use it again and again. It does not damage the habitats or hurt the environment. I can use this source for electricity.

    Task 2
I think renewable energy is the best because non-renewable hurts the environment and damages the animals habitats. An example is a steam train and it uses coal from fossils. The steam that comes out are gases being released into the air which cause pollution.

  28. Miss Lee says:

Great idea Ajay, it is so important to look after our environment! What might you need electricity for?

  29. Hello miss this is my work:

Windmills – to have light and the right temperature or a little breeze in hot days on the island.
Geothermal energy – so that if I need to boil water that would come in use.

I think renewable energy is better because it will not run out or affect planet ,earth like causing global warming. Like Emily said wind power is very efficient, so It has much smaller impact on the environment. It also makes no harm at all to the green house (trees and stuff). Non-renewable energy is made out of animal bones (dinosaurs) and dead plants. Vehicles like cars planes steam trains use this.

  30. Miss Lee says:

    Hello Stella!
Such great ideas Stella, well done! How might non-renewable energy contribute to global warming?

  31. Raimundo says:

    Task 1:
I would use Biomass (biofuel) because there should be a lot of wood that can be burned, we could use the burned wood to use it as fuel.

    Task 2:
I think renewable energy is better because you can use it again and again and also it user natural resources.

  32. Miss Lee says:

Great ideas Raimundo! What might you use the biofuel for?

  33. Hi miss! how are you doing?
well I am doing super good!
    This is my work.

    Task one:
I would choose solar energy so I can be warm and not be an ice cube?.
My second choice is wind energy so I can have light.
I would also use hydropower so I can plant tomatoes or other vegetables.
    Task two:
I think renewable energy is better because some are bad for our earth for example fossil fuel oil and coal, it makes pollution and other bad things we use to much of these items some scientist say that we won’t have any fossil fuel oil in 2050 which is a big problem. But renewable energy is good because it is a natural and it doesn’t harm the planet and we will never need some because we will always have it.

  34. Miss Lee says:

Hello Martin! I am good thank you! I am glad you are doing well!
Good idea but did you see Vincent’s interesting question above… where would you find the solar panels?
Also, good idea about creating light for yourself. Why might this be useful?
Good reasons to back up your answer to Task 2!

  35. Task 1: I would use hydro-electric energy because there would probably be a waterfall in the island. I would use the electricity to call family and friends on my phone.

    Task 2:

Renewal energy is best because it can be reused, and it does not cause harmful gasses that cause global warming and destroy animals habitat.

  36. Miss Lee says:

Interesting ideas! How would you plug your phone in to charge?
How do harmful gases cause global warming?

  37. Hi Miss Lee and everyone! How are you all?

    Task 1
So if I’m still stranded in an island and nobody rescued me yet, I would build solar panels because I will use the energy from the sun to keep me warm. By the sea, there’s strong waves so I could also make wave energy to generate electricity. Also there’s biomass (biofuel) like palm trees, and a lot of wood! This will be handy, for I have a lot of materials to make a shelter. In the island, it is very windy so I could also make a windmill to make electricity.

    Task 2
I think renewable energy is better because it comes from natural resources which will never run out such as the sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves and geothermal heat.

  38. Miss Lee says:

    Hello Clare!
Great ideas about using different sources of energy! What might you use the electricity for?
A good point about renewable energy sources not running out!

  39. Mayowa (*^ω^*) says:

Hello Miss Lee, Hi(* ̄▽ ̄*)

    Task1
I chose Wind energy ?because it wouldn’t cause pollution and it is better because it doesn’t burn fossil fuels, Also it doesn’t harm animals??. I can use this to find signal.
Or I could use Geothermal energy to make a nice warm bath??.
    Renewable energy:
Renewable energy is better than non-renewable because it lasts longer an it won’t run out. I also think that renewable energy is better for the environment because they use natural resources and don’t cause pollution.

    NonNon-renewabale:
Non-renewabale energy is not as good as renewable energy because it uses fossil fuels and it will run out. It also causes pollution and damage to natural habitats.

  40. Miss Lee says:

    Hello Mayowa!
Great idea to make a warm bath! What a relaxing island home you will have built!
How does non-renewable energy damage natural habitats?

  41. Hi Miss Lee,
    Task 1:
I would use biomass so I can make fire for cooking. And I would also use wind energy so I can have electricity.
    Task 2:
Non-renewable energy includes coal, gas and oil. Most cars, trains and planes use non-renewable energy. They are made by burning fossil fuels to create energy.

Renewable energy includes solar, hydro and wind energy. Wind energy is made when the wind moves the blades on a wind turbine. This movement creates wind energy which is converted into electrical energy.

The one I think is best for our plant is the renewable energy. I think this because it does not harm plants or animals.

    Thanks, Tijne
