Today we’re going to be using fractions to find part of a set. If we want to find what ¼ of something is, then we’ll have to put it into 4 groups (because that’s the bottom number) and then see how many are in 1 of the groups (because that’s the top number). You may realise that this is very similar to the division we did last week…
Have a go at this Activity Time. Can you find numbers that you have work out half of? Remember, they have to be EQUAL halves, or else it doesn’t work for that number:
Now see if you can find ¼ or a 1/3 of an amount.
Work through the worksheets, using the pictures to help you. On the second page of each worksheet, there aren’t any pictures, but I would definitely recommend drawing some out to help you work out the answer.
*If you are finding it tricky, then have a go using pictures or objects to help you work through the questions, just like you did in the Activity Time.
*If you managed to work through it, have a go at this extension activity.Extension Activity for children

Dear Miss Carruthers,
I finished all my work and it was ok.
Well done Marie! I’m glad you found it okay!
I’ve completed my maths worksheets and the extension and it was OK. I found matching some of the fractions without any pictures tricky but also used my times table which helped. I will keep practicing.
Wonderful Catherine. I’m impressed you noticed that your times tables help you with fractions. They really do help us with so many things and that is why they are so important to learn 🙂
All done Miss.
