Workbook: 5A
Chapter: 3 Multiplication and Division
Lesson: 3 and 4 Finding Common Factors and Prime Numbers

Printer-friendly version: Thursday Maths blog June 4

Good morning Year 5,

Today we will  consolidate our learning of common factors and prime numbers.

A factor is a number that divides into another number exactly. To find the common factors of two numbers, you first need to list all the factors of each one and then compare them. If a factor appears in both lists then it is a common factor.

A prime number is a whole number greater than 1 that can not be made by multiplying other whole numbers.

Example: 5 is a prime number. We cannot multiply 2, 3 or 4 together to make 5. (Only 1×5 works but we said to use other whole numbers.)

Example: 6 can be made by 2 × 3 so is NOT a prime number (it is a composite number).
