Good morning Year 6,

Illness and suffering are not easy to cope with.  They make a person feel powerless and realise their limitations.  When a person is very sick, they are not able to do what they normally do.  They may not be able to work or to enjoy life as they used to.  Often it is an occasion when people have time to reflect on what is important to them in life.  It is often a time when people think about God and pray more.  Christians remember the suffering of Jesus.  When Jesus sent out his disciples to preach the Good News they;

“…anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.”

 Mark 6: 13

Do you remember from the last blog how the Good Samaritan anointed the wounds of the man who had been mugged and used oil to clean and heal them?  The person who is very ill welcomes the prayers and kindness of those who visit them.

James’ letter has many practical suggestions which include reference to anointing of the sick.

“Are any of you ill?  Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.  And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up.  And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.”

Based on James 5: 14-15

Think about the following questions and have a go at answering them in the comments:

Why do you think oil is used in healing?
What other sacraments include anointing with oil? (there are three others Baptism, Confirmation and  Holy Orders.)
What do you think is most difficult for a sick person and why?
How do you think the sick person feels when they know someone is praying for them?
What do you think James means when he says: ‘the Lord will raise him up’?

The anointing with oil is a symbol of healing and is used in the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick.

Sacrament of the sick 1

Sacrament of the sick 2

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament for anyone who is seriously ill.  It is a sacrament that is commonly given a number of times during an illness, sometimes because the person becomes more ill, or because the sick person would benefit from the strength and comfort the Sacrament gives them.  The Sacrament of Anointing ‘is meant to lead the person to healing of the soul but also of the body if such is God’s will.’  (Catechism Catholic Church 1520)  Through the Sacrament the Holy Spirit helps to calm the worry, anxiety and discouragement the sick person may experience.

Today’s task:

Create a ‘Get Well Soon’ card for those who may be suffering from the Coronavirus. In your card you should use the scripture from James’ letter to encourage and give hope to those who are sick or who are suffering from stress and worry because of the virus.

Alternatively, you could create a considerate card for the elderly who are currently ‘shielding’ and isolating all alone. Can you include some words from the scripture to offer comfort?

In the comments, please share your reasons for your choices using other scripture readings if you can.

I look forward to seeing your work. You can upload it via the Homework Uploader.

As today is not my usual working day, Miss Carruthers will be responding to the blogs. Thank you both 🙂

  3. Good morning everybody,
I will be creating a get well soon card and I have answered the questions below:

I will think oil is used In healing because that Christian’s believe it is a symbol of healing .it is also very sacred because it is used when we enter God’s family during are baptism so it could make the person feel better.

I’ll is also used in Bapsism,a sacrement of the sick, confirmation and Holy orders.

I think the hardest thing for a sick person is to know how weak you are and to worry about if you will ever get better. If you are sick for long you might even be sad and lonely and if you are badly hurt you might be hurt a lot. Also if you are a mother you might worry about if everything Is ok with your children and family.

When a sick person knows that someone is praying for them they probably feel better and reassured for they know they have not been forgotten and that many are thinking about them. They also know that many are worried about them and really want them to come out of the sickness alive.

I think James meant that Good will help the sick get better and come out of the sickness alive. They will rise again so the become better therefor can walk again too.

Can’t wait to see your card 🙂 Well done, you have clearly thought carefully about these questions.

  5. Laetitia says:

Do we have to use formal or informal language?

  6. Miss Carruthers says:

Whichever you would prefer, I think informal might be better for this task 🙂

  7. This will be fun!!♡

  9. Hi Miss. I have noticed an error at the top of the blog. It says good morning year 5 instead of year 6.

  10. Miss Carruthers says:

  11. This seems to like a very fun task! yay!

I can’t wait to see what you do 🙂

  13. Hello!
    Here are my answers:
1)I think oil is used for healing as it is compared to anoint the Bible. It is also used to bless them.

    2) The sacraments which include anointing with oil are Anointing of the sick, Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Orders.

    3) The hardest thing for a sick person is for that person to have resilience through their difficult time. To find physical and mental strength must be hard, especially if they don’t have family and they don’t know anyone who can support them. They might be feeling fine on the outside but in the inside they might feel lonely, sad and scared.

4)When a sick person knows someone is praying for them they feel happy as they know someone cares for them and is by their side. It is comforting.

5)I think James meant God would cure and help those who are sick.

  14. Miss Carruthers says:

Very thoughtful answers Anahi, well done 🙂

  15. My answers

Oil is considered to be a symbol of healing in the Christian faith. It is also used in Catholic baptisms.

I think looking after themselves would be the most hard, purely because it be a little cough to major disabilities.

Happy because they know they are not alone in there tough times .

I think they mean that the Lord will heal them, take care of them and give them what they need to start back up.

  16. Miss Carruthers says:

    Very thoughtful answers, well done.
