Good morning Year 5,
Today we will be looking at Super Scientists and what they do.
First, try to answer these questions:
Now take a look at the answers. Did anything surprise you?
There are different types of scientists.
Today’s task:
Describe the discoveries of five famous scientists.
Here are two of my favourite famous scientists:
You can present this in the form of a PowerPoint (save your PowerPoint as a PDF by clicking ‘Save As’ then ‘PDF’ and send it to us via the Homework Uploader for Miss Carruthers) or in the form of a poster presenting your findings with illustrations.
It is not my working day so Miss Carruthers will kindly respond to the blogs today.
Please look at other children’s work so you can learn about different scientists from them too!
Good luck!
Mrs Avdiu xx

Good morning Miss Carruthers, how would you do today’s task on PowerPoint? Can I just do it on the normal blog?
Thank you.
You can make your poster however you like! You could do it on paper and send in a photo, or do it on the computer and send it in. If you want to type it in the blog, then that is fine too 🙂
Well done Regan and Erin! You’ve done some excellent research and I love your ‘fun facts’ about each one!

Hi Mrs Carruthers,
I have done my powerpoint and set it in as a PDF via the Homework Uploader. I hope you like it! My favourite scientist was Albert Einstein. Erin and I worked on it together!
Hope to see you soon!
Regan
Thank you Miss Carruthers!!
Hello everyone! I hope you have had a nice morning so far!
Here are five scientists and their discoveries:
*ALEXANDER FLEMING*
In 1928, Alexander Fleming , a Scottish scientist, accidentally discovered penicillin.
*NICOLAUS COPERNICUS*
Nicolaus Copernicus discovered the heliocentric theory in 1514.
*LOUIS PASTEUR*
In 1862, French scientist Louis Pasteur discovered and invented the process of pasteurization.
*MICHAEL FARADAY*
Michael Faraday was an English scientist who discovered the principles underlying electromagnetic induction in 1821.
*ARCHIMEDES*
In the 3rd century, Archimedes discovered the laws of levers and pulleys .
I hope you enjoy the rest of the day!
Excellent research Jeanne!
You all seem to be focussing on male scientist. Can you find any women scientist? Or scientist from other countries?
Hello everyone I hope you are all well, this is my answer for today:
Santiago Ramón y Cajal
His career was a doctor and a biologist. The reason he started to study the brain a lot was because two of his seven children died and he was so sad that he wanted to save lives and research the brain more deeply. After a while studying with his friend Camilio they won a Nobel Price for discovering neurons and how the brain works with all of its different sections. Santiago as a child has no interest at all to be either a doctor or biologist but when his father told him about it he slowly started to change his mind.
Albert Einstein
He was a very clever man. He was a physicist that discovered the movement of objects and also invented the most known math equation [formula E mc2]. He was born in Germany but ran away to scape World War 2. His mid-adult hood wasn’t very pleasant for Einstein because once his grandmother even called him a stupid little boy and soon after she died and Einstein didn’t talk for a month. Surprisingly as we know Einstein was clever from a young age he didn’t learn to talk until the age of 4.
Isaac Peral
this Spanish man was the first ever person that discovered and made the sub-marine. He had spent years studying it and how to move through water until he invented the sud-marine. Very little after he joined the navy, somo of his crew liked his idea but more didn’t, so they made used of it in other ways like that we use it for today going for tours to explore a bit of the ocean.
Isaac Newton
he was the first man to ever have the thought of gravity and was it does. He and the help of other people’s discoveries found out about gravity. Apparently his discovery of gravity came when he saw an apple fall from a tree and started to wonder something must be pulling everything down if not we could be flowing all the time. He kept thinking about this discovering new facts about our gravity.
Marie Curie
She was the first and only person who discovered radioactivity. She was a very passionate woman because at her time girls weren’t allowed to do a lot of things. Surprisingly the most people she was the first ever women to win a Nobel Prize and the first ever women to be profesor at the university. This was one of the most greatest inventions at that time because they didn’t have very good instruments and only men could this, there was not much going on until Marie Curie showed up.
Fascinating! I’d never heard of Santiago Ramón y Cajal and Isaac Peral, so I’m please I got to learn about them from you 🙂

Hello everyone, I have been doing today’s science with Iggy, it was really fun. The scientists that we chose are: Stephen Hawking, Galileo Galilei, Albert Einstein, Mary Curie and Isaac Newton.
Steven Hawking: ?
• When Steven was 21, he was diagnosed with ASD, a disease that would slowly shut down his body. The doctor said he would he only had two more years to live, but surprisingly, he lived for another 50.
• Steven was intrigued by the idea of black holes and devoted his life to studying them and the cosmos.
• Even though Steven could move and he had to speak through a computer, he never gave up. “However difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you don’t just give up.” Steven Hawking (1942-2018)
Galileo Galilei: ☀️ ? ?
• Galileo was born in Italy in 1564, during that time, scientists who came up with new ideas, did not test them like the ways we do these days. Instead, they announced that what they said was true and that was that. Galileo however, thought that this way of doing things was wrong, and tested each of his theories before explaining them to other people.
• Galileo carried on famous philosopher, Nicolaus Copernicus’ work on the heliocentric model. He also conducted many other experiments that included dropping a bible and acorn from the top of the Tower of Pisa.
• The church got very angry angry at him and sentenced him to house arrest for life. “We cannot teach people anything, we can only help them discover it within themselves” Galileo Galilei (1564-1642)
Albert Einstein: ? ??
• As a child, Albert was very curious and everyone said that he should try to be more like other children. One day when Albert was sick in bed, his father brought him a compass. Albert was fascinated by it but it was just the start of his questioning of space and time.
• When he was 26 Einstein discovered the theory of relativity, the theory that proposed matter and time were the same and could be converted to each other by reaching the speed of light. His theory (E=Mc2) was used for great things, but also for the atomic bomb. “Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.“ Albert Einstein (1879-1955)
Marie Curie: ?? ☢️
• Marie Curie with the help of her husband Pierre, discovered two radioactive elements called Polonium and Radium. She was Polish and lived quite a hard childhood.
• Marie wanted to be a scientist since she was a little girl but to be a scientist she would have to go to university, sadly Girls weren’t allowed to go to university in Poland. One day she found out that there was a university in France called the ‘Sorbonne’ and they accepted girls! She moved to France and got into the ‘Sorbonne’.
• She was interested in metals, magnets and other things like that, that’s when she realised that some minerals are radioactive! In 1934 she died from radioactivity but her research still carries on today.
“Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only supposed to be understood.” Marie Curie (1867-1934)
Sir Isaac Newton: ? ☀️
• Isaac was an English mathematician, a physicist, an astronomer and a theologian who is widely recognised as one of the most influential scientists of all time and as a key figure in the scientific revolution. He wrote a book called ‘Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica’ (Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy).
• When Isaac was 22, he discovered gravity (the force that makes things go towards a mass). He was sitting under an apple tree when an apple fell on his head, it made Isaac wonder what had made the apple fall towards Earth and not away from it. After some investigating, he found that a force was behind it, gravity. Before Isaac discovered the force, the word gravity was a quality and the meaning was changed for Isaac’s new force. “ Errors are not in the art but in the artificers.” Sir Isaac Newton (1643-1727)
We hope you learn something from this. Have a nice day!

Well done boys! It’s so nice that you could work together on this. You found out lots of information ?
Hello everyone! I hope you are all doing fine at home. ? Here are my answers for today!
Albert Einstein
He was born on March 14th, 1879 and he is known to be the smartest man ever. Einstein never talked until he was 4 years old and broke the silence at dinner. kept practicing sentences in his head and under his breath until he got it right. Albert Einstein created a well-known math equation!!
Issac Newton
He is known to be one of the most well-known scientists of all time, and he discovered amazing things!! Issac Newton was born on 4th January 1643 in Woolsthorpe, England. His father was a rich farmer but sadly he died before Issac Newton was born.
Have a nice day everyone. Bye!
Kayla ?
