Good morning Class 4!

It’s Friday which means you have completed another week of home learning! I am SO impressed with how well you have been doing! I know it is not easy to learn this way but the fact that you have all been logging on each day and completing the tasks proves just how hard-working you all are!

Please find today’s maths task below…

WORKBOOK: 4A
CHAPTER: 6
WORKSHEETS: 11 and 12

EXTENSION: Worksheet 13 Solving Word Problems

Top Tip: Remember to find a fraction of an amount we divide by the bottom and times by the top.
So, to find 2/5 of 20 you need to do
20 Γ· 5 = 4
Then times your answer (4) by the top (the numerator)
4 x 2 = 8
So, your answer is 8

CHALLENGE: Today you have a choice of two challenges…

For all of you football fans, why not try this ‘Maths Of The Day’ challenge by clicking the link below:

Or, have a go at the Mind Workout on page 182.

Subtracting Fractions

First it might help to imagine the two chocolate bars made up of 10 equal pieces.

It is quite tricky to do 2 – 5/12 so to make it easier we convert the two wholes to 1 12/12 (it is still the same amount but we have taken one of the wholes and written it as 12/12 because the chocolate bar is made up of 12 pieces).
Now we can do 1 12/12 – 5/12
Just like when we add fractions, when we subtract fractions if the denominators are the same we don’t change them.

Then we subtract the numerators.
12 – 5 = 7

Let’s look at one more example together…

Both denominators are 6 so they stay the same.

Now we need to subtract the numerators.

Don’t forget you can ask for help with the worksheets or challenges, that is what I am here for!
Good luck and have a wonderful weekend!

    Hello miss
I need a little help whith question three on page 177

  18. Miss Lee says:

Of course! Let me just have a look at it!

  19. Miss Lee says:

So, lets look at 3 (a) first.
    The question is 2 – 2/10
This is quite tricky to do so first we need to write 2 wholes in a different way.
Since we are subtracting 2/10 we should make sure we have some tenths to subtract from.
10/10 makes 1 whole. We have 2 wholes so we can write it like this:
1 10/10 (one and ten tenths)
    Now we can subtract 2/10
The 1 stays the same, the denominator stays the same so we just need to do 10 – 2 = 8
So, our answer is 1 8/10 (one and eight tenths)
We now need to write it in the simplest form.

The 1 whole does not change, we only simplify the fraction.
The fraction says 8/10 so we need to find the largest possible number that goes into 8 and 10
4 goes into 8 but not into 10
    2 goes into 8 AND 10!

Divide the top (8) and bottom (10) but 2…
    8 divided by 2 = 4
    10 divided by 2 = 5
So now our fraction is 4/5 (four fifths)
Don’t forget the 1 at the front!

Our answer is 1 4/5 (one and four fifths)

I hope that makes sense, if it doesn’t let me know and I can draw it out on some square paper and upload it onto the blog!
