Workbook: 6B
Chapter: 9 Algebra
Lessons: 3 and 4 Describing a Pattern
Printer-friendly version: Tuesday maths blog
Good morning Year 6!
Today we will continue to revise patterns and in particular expressing a missing number algebraically.
First, have a look at this demonstration:
We can focus on a pattern, which emerges if the middle number of the 5 consecutive numbers is put in the centre of the pattern.
Notice that the sum is 3 times the value of the centre number. We can express this as a general rule. If the middle value was called p, what would the sum be? Some will suggest 3 ×p or p × 3. We can write 3 x p as 3(p) or simply as 3p.

Good luck!

I have completed the workbook pages and I did the confident extension which was challenging but it did it after reading the question twice.
That is great! I am glad reading the question twice helped 🙂
I will be doing five bars of mathletics as well.
