Workbook: 6B

Chapter: 9 Algebra

Lessons: 7 and 8

Good morning Year 6!

Today we will be revisiting writing formulae.

Notice how the pattern progresses. Since the number increases in threes, the rule should include + 3.  How else could repeated addition of 3 be expressed?

The pattern is in fact related to multiples of 3. It goes up in threes, but it does not begin with 3 since the first pattern is 4. How does this affect the rule? The expression for the rule is: 1 + 3n.

The rule is essentially the formula to find any number in the pattern, which we call ‘n’. We can use another letter to represent the nth number in the pattern, such as p. In this case, p = 1 + 3n is a formula.

  1. Done!

  2. Miss Carruthers says:

Well done Aryan! How did you find it?

  3. Morning Miss Carruthers,
I wanted to ask ,is it the number that comes before or after the letter when you are multiplying in algebra?

  4. Miss Carruthers says:

That’s a really good question. If you are meaning 2 times n, for example, you would write it as 2n. Does that make sense?

  5. Yes thank you I understand it much better now. And I have done the MNP pages and finished the extension which I found easier than usual

  6. Miss Carruthers says:

Well done Ariella! You must really understand it well if you found the extension easier than usual ⭐

  7. Good Morning Miss Carruthers, I have done the pages of MNP and I have done the extension, later on I will be doing five bars of Mathletics and extra non verbal reasoning practise.

  8. Miss Carruthers says:

You’ve got a busy day ahead of you! Good luck 🙂

  9. Thanks you and I think I’m starting to find algebra easier now from all the practise I have had.

  10. Miss Carruthers says:

That is wonderful news Elly, I’m so pleased 🙂

  11. Done!

  12. Miss Carruthers says:

Well done Tim! How was it? Do you feel more confident with algebra now?

  13. Miss Gorick says:

Well done all of you! I love algebra as solving an equation is like solving a puzzle ?!
