Reviewing Fractions
Counting in Hundredths
When we count in hundredths we imagine a whole has been split into 100 equal parts.
Sometimes, remembering our place value columns helps us to count in hundredths. We know that 80 hundredths is more than 7 hundredths.
Mixed Numbers
A mixed number is a number made up of a whole number and a fraction, like this:
Equivalent Fractions
When we find equivalent fractions, we multiply the top (numerator) and the bottom (denominator) number of the fraction by the same number. Like this:
Simplifying Fractions
When we simplify a fraction, we need to think of the highest possible number that we can divide the numerator and the denominator by. In the example below, we could have divided 6 and 12 by 2 or 3 but the highest number that could divide both is 6. Therefore, to write the fraction in its simplest form we divided the numerator and the denominator by 6. The whole number stays as it is.
Adding Fractions
When we add fractions, if the denominator in both fractions is the same, we keep it how it is. We only add the numerators. Like this:
Subtracting Fractions
Just like when we add fractions, when we subtract we only subtract the numerators (if the denominators are the same we leave them as they are). However, in the question below, it is quite tricky to do 1 2/5 – 3/5
So first, we need to convert the fraction. This means we change it but it is still worth the same amount.
See the example below:
Solving Word Problems
To solve word problems, read the question carefully. Sometimes it helps to draw out the question so that you can see the fractions clearly.
To find a fraction of an amount, you divide by the bottom and times by the top.

Good luck!
