Hello Class 1!
As you know, your current topic is Great Britain and you are looking at British seasides!
In Friday’s art blog, we looked at some pictures of Victorian seaside holidays and you created some beautiful sketches of these. Today we are going to learn all about Victorian seaside holidays and compare them with modern seaside holidays. Modern means now.
Let’s take a look…
(Click on the images to make them bigger.)

In Victorian times, they have ice-cream and now there are still ice-cream! Now and in Victorian times there were sandcastles!
In modern times there are lots of buildings but in the past there were just few buildings. I prefer Victorian times because in modern times the buildings are polluting our earth and ladies were wearing beautiful dresses. But now men and women can bath together and we go in the sea with our bathing suits, which is better.
Well done Clémence, I can tell that you have thought very carefully about Victoria and modern seaside holidays!
Hello Miss Lee,
In Victorian times and modern times both love eating ice cream, building sandcastles and being in the sea.
These days:
There is more rubbish because we have so much plastic which they didn’t have in Victorian times.
There are more buildings.
People sunbath which the Victorians didn’t do. They were always fully dressed.
People go abroad which the Victorians didn’t have the option of doing.
There are no bathing machines like the Victorian women used to go in to the sea.
Challenge
In the modern seaside picture there are more people. It looks very crowded, more buildings, people sunbathing and it is a colourful photo as the Victorians only had black and white photos.
Fantastic work Saoirse! You have looked very carefully at the information and pictures, well done!
Today there is a lot of people on the beach but in
Victorian time was not many.
In Victorian time there was no sunbathing chairs.
In Victorian time the beach was much cleaner .
When people went sunbathing they use a full cloths in Victorian time but now everyone use bikinis.
Good work Julia! I can tell you have read the information and thought in detail about it! Well done!
Dear Miss Lee
I think the differences are now we swim in the sea and in the Victorian times they went in carriages.
In the Victorian times women used to sunbathe in carriages and now sunbathe on the beach.
Beaches were much more cleaner in the Victorian times and now the beaches are messy and sometimes the sea is polluted.
In the Victorian times people used to go to the beach wearing lots of clothes but now we don’t .
Challenge

People like to lie down and get a suntan at the beach
People lie on sun loungers at the beach.
People put sun cream on at the beach to help them get a tan.

Hello Basile!
Well done for sorting the similarities and differences between Victorian seaside holidays and modern seaside holidays! Super work!
Hello Miss Lee,
In the Victorian Days they used to do ‘Sea Bathing’ but now we do ‘Sun bathing’ instead. when we go swimming we wear swimming suits but in the Victorian days they used to swim with their clothes on. The beach used to be very clean but now the beaches are very dirty because people are throwing their rubbish on the floor. There are things that haven’t changed like eating icecream and building sandcastles.
Similar-
– people go there for holiday
– people go their to swim
– people still have icecreams on the beach
Different –
– There are more people in the modern seaside then the Victorian seasides
– People now sit on chairs insted of sitting on the sand.
– In the Victorian Times they used to wear a lot of clothes to the seaside but now we only wear swimsuits.

I’m glad they still sell ice cream at the beach!
Hi, Miss Lee!
Same: eating ice cream, bundling sandcastles, having fun, relaxing, spending time with family and friends.
Different: swimsuits, the amount of trash (more at the modern seaside), use of bathing machines for women at the victorian seaside, the amount of people (more at the modern seaside).
Hi Miss Lee and Miss Travers
Here are my answers:
THINGS THAT HAVE CHANGED
In Victorian Times there were less people and now there are more people. In Victorian Times men and woman were divided in places in the beach.
In Victorian Times people could not go to other country and now we can.
THINGS THAT HAVE NOT CHANGED
People still build sandcastles and still eat ice cream.
People still love spending holidays in the beach.
Challenge
Now there are more chairs and less clothes, in Victorian Times there were no chairs and more clothes.
