Queen Elizabeth II remains the only female member of the royal family to have entered the armed forces and is the only living head of state who served in World War II.

Elizabeth II lived through World War II and was crowned Queen Elizabeth II on June 2, 1953, in Westminster Abbey, at the age of 27! Elizabeth had assumed the responsibilities fo the ruling monarch on February 6, 1952, when her father, King George VI, died.
