Good morning Year 5!
You have been working so hard on division this week. The great thing is you will be able to apply that learning when making fractions!
Today’s focus: Dividing to make fractions: dividing whole numbers to create fractions; and creating mixed numbers and improper fractions when dividing whole numbers.
Let’s revisit…
What are fractions?
A fraction is a number that is used to represent a whole number that has been divided into equal parts. They are written as the number of equal parts being counted and are separated by a line. The number above the line is called the numerator, which is the number of parts you have.

Have a try yourself: slice the pizza
An easy way to remember:
♫Dividing fractions, as easy as pie,
Flip the second fraction, then multiply.
And don’t forget to simplify,
Before it’s time to say goodbye” ♫
In other words “I have half a pizza, if I divide it into one-sixth slices, how many slices is that?”
Once you have watched the videos and tried the pizza slicer, complete worksheet 1 and then try the consolidation: Dividing by fractions

Hi guys!
This morning my dad taught me how to divide by 2 & 3-digit numbers. Now I find it easier. To make sure that I can do it, me and my parents will be having a competition ; my dad will write down division sums and I will try to answer faster than my mum AND try to make it correct. It’s very fun!!!

Jeanne, I saw your comment on the maths blog and replied to you but you may not have seen it.
The reason why dividing by two digits is not taught in Year 5 or in any of all the MNP division worksheets we have completed is because it is a Year 6 objective! The National Curriculum says that in Year 5 you will learn to ‘divide numbers up to 4 digits by a one-digit number’ and in Year 6 you will learn to ‘ divide numbers up to 4 digits by a two-digit number’. I have checked MNP and none of the questions require you to divide by a two digit number. Good luck solving the problems in your competitions! Such a great idea!

I have done the worksheet for today and I have done the consolidation challenge it was very easy!!
I just wanted to say that in the consolidation challenge you can not see the division sign, it may look like a addition sign but it is a division sign 🙂

Hello everyone, I have finished ✅ the extension and here is the word problem that I made up for it:
Marcus rides his horse. If he rides 14 and 2/7 km in a week, how many kilometres does he ride in a day. Give your answer as a fraction.
P.S. I will give the answer later today.

I have done today’s maths and I am about to do the dance. I cannot wait to come up with some funky dancing. Just like Jeanne and Zavan I also know how to do dividing by 2 and 3 digit numbers.
