Today’s word problems are going to be a little bit trickier because they all need you to do more than one step. This means you’ll have to do more than one calculation to get to the final answer. Keep using CUBES to help you, and keep re-reading the question so you know when you have reached the final answer.
Take a look at today’s In Focus task from the Textbook.
We know how many male adults there are and how many female adults. We also know that there are 29 fewer children than the total of all the adults.
So, our first step needs to be – what is the total number of adults? To do this we would have to add the male and female adults together (46+49=95). Now that we know the total adults, we can take away 29 as there are 29 fewer children than adults (95-29=66). The question is asking how many children there are, and we now know that there are 66.
It is quite a lot to do for each question! So read the questions carefully and take your time. Don’t forget to do column method to work out your answers. Good luck!
If you want to challenge yourself, have a go at Worksheet 4. These problems are a little bit trickier so make sure you read the questions carefully and understand what the question is asking you to do.

I finished my lesson 3 and it was easy but I am stuck with the second step of the first problem in worksheet 4. I thought 64 was the weight of the mangos but it is not. Why is it 32??
It’s a very tricky one. 64 + 15 = 89. This is the total for the mangoes AND the pears. And so you need to share the 64 into two groups to find out how much the pears weigh. The mango would weigh what the pears weigh plus 25. Does that help?

we did worksheet 3 and it was easy. Worksheets 4 was a bit tricky: for the problem number 1 we needed my mum help and the rest was ok.
We had a go to Problem solving on white Rose maths and we did not understand the problem number 4. The rest was ok.

I have forgotten to do my word problem so here it is.
Hannah has 100 apples and Sam has 50 less and then Sam eats 3.
How many apples do Sam and Hannah have all together?

I’ve completed my maths worksheet 3, worksheet 4 and the extra questions. I found it OK.
Worksheet 4 was harder but I worked through it. Question 4 in the problem solving was very tricky.
