Workbook: 6B
Chapter: 10 Area and Perimeter
Lesson: 2, 6 (Area of parallelograms)
printer-friendly version: Wednesday maths blog
Good morning Year 6!
Today we will look at area of parallelograms.
What is a parallelogram?
A parallelogram is a polygon with four sides (a quadrilateral). It has two pairs of parallel sides (sides which never meet) and four edges. The opposite sides of a parallelogram have the same length (they are equally long). The word “parallelogram” comes from the Greek word “parallelogrammon” (bounded by parallel lines). Rectangles, rhombuses, and squares are all parallelograms.
It looks a bit like a rectangle that’s been nudged over!
Here is an example (with answers) of how to find the area of parallelograms using the formula bh.
Like rectangles, parallelograms can always be cut into two triangles of the same area. If we know the formula to find the area of a triangle, 1⁄2bh, and every parallelogram is made up of two triangles with the same area, what would the formula be for the area of a parallelogram? It would be bh.
Once you have completed the worksheets, consolidate your learning here:
If you are feeling confident, why not try the extension White Rose Maths Area of parallelogram?
Please ask any questions in the comments.
Good luck!

Hello Miss Carruthers,
I found the maths very helpful especially the Parellelograms worksheets.
Now I can work out the area of the Parellelograms very quickly.
I’m so glad that you found today’s work so helpful! 🙂
Thanks for sending in your MNP pages Charles! Well done for doing your work 🙂 Now you can have a go at the extension!
