I absolutely loved our chat yesterday! It was so wonderful to see you all and hear how you are doing. We all miss you lots and I really hope we can see each other properly soon.
Lots of you mentioned how much fun you are having in the park at the moment (as well as how much ice cream you’re eating..!) and so for today’s art activity, we’re going to use the park as inspiration.
If you go to the park and look closely at the trees, you’ll notice that they are bumpy and rough. Which isn’t always how we draw them in our drawings…
No tree trunk is that smooth!
So today we are going to show texture in our drawings by showing how rough the bark is. We can do this by drawing lines onto the trunk to show the rough texture. Have a look at these photos of tree trunks.
To start with, see if you can draw a practise drawing that is just the rough texture of the bark on the tree trunk:
Practise drawing small wavy lines in one direction to make it look rough. If you look in the picture above, you can see that they have move wavy lines on one side compared to the other. This helps your drawing to look more 3D.
Once you are confident with your bark on the tree trunks, you can now do your own picture of the park. Think about which ever park you like to visit the most. We are lucky in London because there are so many great parks!
These trees in Regents Park would be perfect to draw!
You may be able to go outside and then you can see the trees in real life and draw them. But if it is raining, then you may just have to use your imagination! You can do your whole drawing in just pencil, or try out using different colours. If you are using coloured pencils, then you may want to lightly colour the tree trunk and then press harder to show the texture.

I did three trees with different textures and the coloured one is supposed to look a bit mossy!
I can name six types of tree in the park: Plain, Lime, Oak, Ash, Silver Birch and Weeping Willow.
