Now that we have worked out how to find the total and how to find the amount of change, it is time to use this in more word problems. Now remember, you always always always have to read the questions carefully. Some of these questions might want you to do more than one thing before you get the final answer, so be careful!

Have a look at the In Focus task:

We need to find out how much the pink and blue t-shirt cost altogether, but we don’t yet know how much the blue t-shirt costs.

Step 1: Find out how much the blue t-shirt costs.

If the pink t-shirt is £9 less than the blue one, then we must have to do the amount of the pink t-shirt plus £9. So we do £17 + £9 = £26.

Step 2: Find how much they cost altogether.

Now we know what each of the t-shirts costs, we can add the pink and blue t-shirt together. So £17 + £26 = £43

Have a go at working through Worksheet 10.

If you want some more practise, then work through Review 10 which is filled with all sorts of money questions.

And of course, there is the Fun Friday BBC Bitesize Maths Challenges! Click here to have a go.
