Hello Class 5!

This is the Class 4 Reading Blog! Here we can share and discuss all of the exciting books we have read in school or at home. Reading is SO important as it helps us to learn, improves our vocabulary and best of all it helps our imagination to grow!

Anytime you have finished reading a book tell us on this blog.
Your comment will need to include:

  • Title
  • Author
  • Book Review (short summary of the story and introduce the characters)
  • Rating out of 10 (What did you enjoy most?)

Make sure you also read each other’s comments too as you may want to write a question to someone about their book to find out more. Or you might find inspiration for your next read!

As lots of you know, I am a Harry Potter fan and I know there are lots of HP fans in our class. I have written an example review for you to see so that you know what to include in your own book reviews…

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
By J.K. Rowling.

Harry Potter believes he is a perfectly normal boy. Unfortunately, he lives with his hot-tempered Uncle Vernon, his nosy Aunt Petunia and his rather unkind cousin, Dudley. Living in a stuffy old cupboard under the stairs is just one of the reasons why Harry hates living with the Dursleys. Unusual things happen to Harry, such as an incident with a snake at the zoo! Then, some peculiar letters start arriving for Harry; this confuses and irritates Uncle Vernon so he takes the family on a trip where he thinks no-one will find him however, he was greatly mistaken. A giant-sized man with fierce, yet kind, black eyes goes to tell Harry some very astonishing news: Harry is a wizard! Soon, Harry has lots of adventures in his new wizarding school, Hogwarts, but not all is fun and games. Someone is planning to steal a special object being hidden in Hogwarts…

I would rate this book 10/10 because the author has a way of writing which really draws the reader in and makes it incredibly hard to stop reading! When you are reading it, you feel like you are inside the book.  This book has been made into a film but I would definitely recommend reading the book first along with the other Harry Potter books.

  14. Enid Blyton
The Famous Five – Five on Finniston Farm

I really liked this book, a bit more than the others in the series that I have read. The Five are children: Julian, Dick and Anne are brothers and sister; George is a cousin and she is actually a girl but wants to be a boy and she has a dog, Timmy. They went on vacation in a farm in the countryside, guests of Mrs Philpot. There they met two Americans: Mr Henning and his son Junior, who was very annoying. They also met Harry and Harriet, identical twins of Mrs Philpot. The Five and the twins helped in the farm and discovered underground cellars and dungeons with a treasure. I liked it 10 out of 10 and my favourite part is when Grandad hold an antique sword and said “Where is that American? Maybe I want to try it on him ?! “ ?

  23. Hello Elisa!
This sounds like a great book! Your description sort of reminds me of Romulus and Remus, the Roman myth we read in Year 4!

  24. Hi Miss Lee! I’ve just been starting a book which is called “The Secret Garden” -Frances Hodgson Burnett. So far, this book is based in India where there is this ‘infection’ which causes you watery diarrhoea. In the story there was this girl that lived with her Ayah and a few servants. The story then continues with other things that involved.. well, you have to read it if you want to find out! But just keep in mind this is only my perspective of the book. Rating so far: 8/10.

  25. Hello Clare!
I am glad that you are enjoying this book so far! This used to be one of my favourite books when I was younger!

  26. My book I’m reading is

Dairy of the wimpy kid ‘dog days ‘
    Author is Jeff Kinney
The story so far is about, when greg heffley gets a dog named sweetheart and it tells you about Greg’s life with the dog

  27. This seems like a funny book… I have seen you laughing at it a few times in school! ? Would you recommend it to your friends?

  28. The Famous Five collection (22 books)

The Famous Five are a group of four children and a dog who find adventure wherever they go. The are called Julian Kirrin, Dick Kirrin, Anne Kirrin, George Kirrin, (their cousin,) and Timothy, a wonderful dog. My three favourites are Five get into Trouble, Five go on a hike together, and Five go to Billycock hill.
In Five get into trouble the Five are on a biking tour but Dick is kidnapped in the case of a mistaken identity. They go off to rescue him with a boy called Richard who was supposed to be kidnapped. Once they find him, Richard takes a disguise but unfortunatly the kidnapper recognises him so all the children and dog are captured. Finally, Richard offeres to squash himself into the boot of a car to fetch the police.
In Five go on a hike together, Dick is passed some secret message by mistake, so the Five try to solve it. However, some other bad people are also after solving the secret in order to get the hidden treasure, but unluckily for the people, the Five find the treasure and return it to their owner.
Finally, in Five go to Billycock Hill, the Five are camping near Billycock Hill because their friend lives there and works on a farm. They also meet their friend’s cousin who is called Jeff, and he instantly also becomes their friend. Then, one tragic day, Jeff is accused of stealing two planes because he goes missing. Luckily, the Five find Jeff with the help of a pig (if you read the book you will know what I am talking about) and everything becomes normal again, because somebody else stole the planes, not Jeff.
I give all of these books a rating 10/10, and I would recommend this to anybody who likes adventure stories.

  29. This is a very detailed book review of the Famous Five series… Well done!
I am glad you have enjoyed reading these books! It seems they are popular amongst our class, I wonder who will read them next?
Which was your favourite book of the series?

  30. I am reading a book called Danny dingles fantastic finds the metal mobile. It is about a boy called Danny and one day he wants to work for this super hero called metal face. His best friend Percy want to work for him as well. One day they were given an assignment for science. They love science. It was for a soap box race and the prise was three tickets ? to metal way. Metal faces theme park. They won the race and got the tickets. I can’t tell you what happened next because it is in the next book. This book was written by Angie Lake. 1 out of 10 I would give it out 9 because there is some weird humour inside the book. I recommend this book to anyone who likes science, humour, inventing stuff and drawing. This book made me laugh a lot. ??

  31. Hello Holly!
This sounds like a good book and it is great that it has made you laugh a lot!
Thank you for recommending it, I am sure someone in the class will be interested after reading your review!

  32. Oh yeah! That does remind me about Romulus and Remus now you say it!

  33. I think that my favourite book of the Famous Five series is Five fall into adventure. In the book, tomboy George and Timmy get kidnapped because she is the daughter of a genius, and kidnappers want his special notebook of secrets. The children and a tomboy girl called Jo make a plan of getting George and Tim to safety. When they row back home, they send the police after the kidnappers and all ends well.
I think that is my favourite book and rating is 1,000,000 out of ten!?

  34. This sounds like an action-packed book! Thank you for sharing your favourite Famous Five book!
(I like the use of 1,000,000 after our maths lessons last week and today! 😀 )

  35. I really like this book too! It’s super, but I hate Mr Henning and horrible Junior.

  36. I also like Percy Jackson, the books are about a greek demigod called Percy and he has lots of magical adventures with his friends.

I know that these books are meant for older kids, but they are really gripping and will get you on the edge of your seat to find out what’s next.

  37. I also have another favourite book. It is called Holes and it is also meant for older kids. I have read it a few times and I think that in Year 6 we could read it as a class book. Anyway, the main character is called Stanley Yelnats and it is about him running away from summer camp and he goes up a mountain to escape with a friend. The only food they had were onions, but that was good because it would protect them from a yellow- spotted lizard, the most dangerous lizard in the world. When they were found, the boys were in a small hole, with the lizards surrounding them. The boys were fine because they ate the onions, but all the Summer Camp people were attacked and died.

At least, that is what I think had happened because I read the book quite a long time ago. I give it a rating 9/10.

  38. Yes you are right, you might read this book when you are in Year 6! It is a great book, I remember reading it when I was at school too!
It is great that you have enjoyed reading a variety of books!

  39. Tyler :his story rating: 5 stars
    by: Roderick hunt
the book is about a boy that saved science in France because they wanted to destroy science . He was an orphan looking for a home but he did not find one and when he stopped the bomb he broke his leg and ended up in a wheel chair .Then when he was older he became a librarian but then some kids ended up in the 1900 s with Tyler

  40. Wow this sounds like an action-packed book! Which was your favourite part and why?

  41. Hello Everyone !
I have started reading new books and the first one I read in year 5 was Dork Diaries……..
DRAMA QUEEN! I love the way it is presented and the exiting story. I also love the characters and the setting. So I read the book (for the 100th time)! It is a superglamorous book.
I recommend it to the people which like Wimpy Kid and Locker Hero it is sure you’ll like it. Though you also might not like it just for the reason it is.
Secondly I read my Oxfard reading tree book (my hero) it was called- (You might be wondering WHY an Oxfard reading tree book is MY hero. Probably because I was going to read Drama Queen for the
102 nd time!) ————— ————–. It is a pretty good book full of adventures. There are lodes of different sizes, GIANT, tiny and normal.

Then I read another book of dork Diaries …..
    Holiday heart break.

I really love reading books and I am desperate of reading more.
Has any of you read all of the dork Diaries?

  42. Rating dork diaries (both books)
    9/10
    Oxfard reading
    6 or 7/10

  43. Hello Stella!
It is great that you have found a book which you enjoy reading so much! I have often read my favourite book (Harry Potter) a number of times!
This story sounds interesting, what makes it super glamorous?
I think I have seen a few people in our class reading Dork Diaries.
Maybe someone could recommend a book for Stella to read next?

  44. I have also seen the Witches ( and read the the book )!

  45. YES PLEASE
    ??‍♀️??

  46. Stella, I have a recommendation. Have you read Millions: The Not-So-Great train robbery? It is about a boy and his brother and one day a bag of money drops magically through the sky. It is funny, sometimes depressing, and will make you want to read more.
What do you think? Would you like to read more? ?

  47. I am currently reading a polish book called Tosia* and the adventure on the beach. (*Pronouncation, Tosha). It is about a small girl called Tosia and she has lots of adventures and a very vivid imagination. There is another book called the surveyor’s secret.

Anyway, it is the summer holidays and Tosia has promised herself not to have a vivid imagination, which would be hard because her imagination is literally what makes her adventures. Tosia makes a new friend on the beach, and they have an adventure together with running away from pirates, and being stranded on a island with an active volcano.

This is all I know about the book so far. If you want, I can make a translation and then read it to the whole class so you understand it.

  48. This sounds great and it is wonderful that you enjoy reading in Polish too! I am sure the class would love to hear part of the story!

  49. Oh thanks Julia!

    Where is the assembly script?

  52. I have been reading the collection, secret seven.
I am on the 15th book and it is about a farmer who wouldn’t pay a man’s fees. Then they need to find a hiding place for the man, tolly and his horse browny from dangerous horse thieves.

    I would rate it 7/10
    Author: Enid Blyton.

  53. This sounds like a great book! I do love Enid Blyton books!

  54. Hi miss lee, I have been reading this book called oh my gods and basically what happens is that there is this girl who is the daughter of Zeus the ruler of the gods. Her half sister Aphrodite moves in and is very annoying and she even turned her hair green! but that is so far what I have read.

  55. Hi Holly!
This sounds like a great book! Later this term we will be learning about Viking gods. Maybe you will notice some similarities and differences between the Viking gods and the Greek gods in your book!

  56. Miss Lee, I also do not know which blog to post this on, but can I use a bow for part of my Viking costume?

  57. Hello Julia!
    Yes of course!

  58. The book I am reading right now is Alex Rider, Point Blanc. It is about a teenage spy who actually doesn’t want to be a spy because he says that MI6 uses him, but he still goes on all of those missions.

At the moment, MI6 have found out that a very millionareish person was murdered, and Alex Rider is sent to the boarding school Point Blanc because the headmaster called Dr. Grief is the main suspect of the case, and when Alex finds out Dr. Grief did murder the millionare, Dr Grief found out that Alex was working for MI6, and almost succeded in killing Alex.

This is all I know of the story; it is very intense and I really want to know what will happen next. Rating at the moment: 10/10.

  59. Wow this sounds like a very action-packed book! It is great that you are enjoying it as it!

  60. I have been reading Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire, At this moment I am on chapter 22 and I started reading it since 3 weeks! I read one (or two) chapters everyday. In the chapter I’m reading now Harry gets to Hogwarts with Ron and Hermione but there is a new teacher called Mad Eye Moody. He’s pretty funny and crazy, he teaches them some levitation spells. I’m enjoying the book and I’m interested in reading more long books because this is my first long book I read.

  61. This is a wonderful book! Who is your favourite character so far?

  62. The book I am reading now is Monsters, Mayhem, and a sprinkling of Crumbs. It is about notorious robbers called the Unstoppables that are on the loose, and the Crumb family has enough evidence to lock them up for good. But their aunt is taking them to her boar farm in the middle of nowhere! The Crumbs have to somehow drive the robbers into a trap so that they could stop the Unstoppables!

  63. This sounds like another great book! You will have to tell us how it ends!

  64. Hello miss lee,
i am reading the secret seven and it is really fun.

  65. Hello Holly! That’s great to hear! Which is your favourite bit so far?

  66. Enid Blyton
The Famous Five – The five have lots of fun

I really like this series and I have read another one. This was not as enjoyable as last one but I liked it because a character from a previous one came back to help and rescue George, who was kidnapped by mistake. Her name is Jo.
I liked this book because there are also two new characters, Berta and Sally (her little dog): I enjoyed very much when the two dogs, Timmy and Sally, were dancing around in happiness.
I am very fond of the adventures these kids have lived in the British countryside. I would really like to go on an adventure like this with my friends and find gold bars like in the first and the fourteenth books of the series.

  67. This is a very detailed review, well done Paolo! It is so great that you are enjoying Enid Blyton’s books! She is such a great writer and her books are full of adventure!
It definitely would be fun to go on an adventure and find some gold bars!

  68. The fourteenth book is the Five have lots of Fun and they didn’t find any bars of gold there. Maybe you mixed up the books? 🤔

  69. Mayowa (*^ω^*) says:

I am reading “The Famous Five ” Five run away together.

It is about them having to put up with the horrible stick family.
That is all I have read.

  70. The Famous Five is a great book! Have you read any more of it yet?

  71. I HAVE READ ALL OF THE FAMOUS FIVE AND I LOVE IT!!!!!!

  72. I am reading Vango: A prince without a kingdom. It is about a boy called Vango and he wants to find out the secret of his life, because he was washed up on some island and nobody ever knew how he got there. Unfortunatley, some people which are Vango’s enemies also want to find out about him, and they want to get the secret before Vango does.

  73. This sounds like a great book Julia! I wonder how it will end?!

  74. PG👾👾👾 says:

Hello to you all! I have just finished The Famous Five – Five go off to Camp, no. 7. I really liked it, as they have an adventure about spook-trains. They go camping on the moors and mysterious trains use a abandoned yard in the middle of the night and then disappear.
I would like to go on an adventure too.

  75. Number 7! Wow you are getting through these books quickly! How many are there in the series? Which one has been your favourite so far?

  76. The thing that I don’t really like about Five go off to camp is that the boys Julian, Jock and Dick think that the two girls, Anne and George won’t be allowed to take part in this adventure as they think it may be too dangerous for them, and when the boys go and have part of the adventure on their own George is LIVID when she finds out that the boys went off on part of the adventure by themselves.
Later on George joins them in the adventure when the boys are captured. (I won’t tell you how she joined them because then it would be a spoiler.)
    Rating: 9/10.

  77. Dear Miss Lee, I am reading” How to train your dragon” I just got the whole collection yesterday. It is about a boy called Hiccup that tries to become a viking and he has to take four rough years in pirate training to become a real viking . He wants to become the chief of the Hairy hooligan tribe {that’s the name of the village} while his cousin, the strong enormous bully “Snotface Snotlout” is showing of how good he is. Maybe he will become the chief of the Hairy hooligans but only if Hiccup gets killed by the Hysterics {Hysterics are the strongest vikings in the world}I don’t know if it is going to happen,I have only read 70 pages.

  78. Hi Giordano!
It is great that you are enjoying these books! How many are there in the collection?
I have only seen the film of How to Train your Dragon but I might have to give the books a read. They seem popular in our class and they link to our topic! 🙂
