In our Geography lessons, we have been learning to read and interpret maps to scale.
We learnt that the scale of a map is the ratio of a distance on the map to the corresponding distance on the ground.
We firstly studied a map with smaller scale (a map which can show a large area but a small amount of detail). This map showed the whole of London and had a scale of 1cm=10km.
We then studied a map with a larger scale (a map which can show a small area but in greater detail). This map just showed a part of Westminster and had a scale of 1cm=75m.
We used string to measure the distances in order to make our measurements more accurate. We used string to plan our route on the map and then measured the length of string using a ruler.
Whilst reading the maps, we discovered some fun facts including that it is 480m from the Houses of Parliament to 10 Downing Street!
