This week our book of the week was ‘The Snail and the Whale’ by Julia Donaldson so we have been learning more about snails.  We already know lots about whales from our ‘Under the Sea’ topic!

We listened carefully for rhymes in the story and made some very long rhyming strings like this: snail, whale, tail, sail, trail, mail.

We looked for snails in our Growing Area outside and there are lots and lots of them. They are eating all of the broad bean plants that we planted in our Growing topic!  We used the iPads to take our own photographs of them.

We looked closely at the photos that we had taken and lots of other photos of snails to investigate the spirals on their shells. We drew and painted spirals and even danced them using long ribbons in the air.

We learned that snails leave sticky trails and we found snail trails outside. We made our own spiral snail trails using glue and glitter.

Finally, we looked closely at ‘The Snail’ by Henri Matisse and looked for the spiral he created using cut out shapes.

Then we chose our coloured card and cut out shapes of our own to create our own pictures in the style of Matisse. We listened to Jazz music while we worked because that is what Matisse loved to listen to when he was working on a piece of art.
