Our Spring topic will be… Historical Heroes!
We all know some made up superheroes, like Batman and Wonder Woman, and they are truly amazing! These heroes can fly, swing through cities, or have super-human strength which helps them to save the world. Whilst they are great, there are other heroes that have lived throughout history. They might not have the special or magical powers like you have seen in films, but they do have something incredibly special about them, they have done something in their lifetime which has had a huge impact on others. Some of the heroes that we will learn about have become famous over time because of the way that their work has influenced the way that we live, or the things that we do, even today in 2023!
This will be an exciting topic for us in Year 2, as we will be able to research these individuals and learn all about why we remember them. We will also be able to learn more about different time periods and begin to develop our understanding of global and British history even further.
I would like you to consider what makes a hero, and think about your own heroes. Read the questions below and post your answers on the blog. I look forward to reading your ideas!
- Can you think of a historical hero that we might be learning about?

Here are some of the historical hero that we researched.
Charles Dickens was a famous author who created fictional characters that are known around the world 200 years after his death. And his stories provide an insight into Victorian life. Charles Darwin is well for making the biggest most dangerous and far-reaching scientific breakthrough in history. Known for his theory of evolution, Sir Thomas More was a English politician, humanist scholar, and writer who refused to comply with the Act of Supremacy, by which English subjects were enjoined to recognize Henry VIII’s authority over the pope, and was imprisoned in the Tower of London and beheaded for treason. We can all be a hero as long we follow a purpose to make better changes looking back in time I saw different personalities using their voice, influence or money to shift the path of that century.
I am going to the Florence Nightingale museum and I can’t wait to learn more about her history.
I know about Mary Seacole. She was born in Kingston,Jamaica. Her dad was Scottish and her mum was Jamaican. She went to the Crimean War and helped a lot of people.
Louis Braille was blinded at the age of three in one eye as a result of an accident with a stitching awl in his father’s harness making shop. Consequently, an infection set in and spread to both eyes, resulting in total blindness. At that time there were not many resources in place for the blind, but he nevertheless excelled in his education and received a scholarship to France’s Royal Institute for Blind Youth. While still a student there, he began developing a system of tactile code that could allow blind people to read and write quickly and efficiently. Inspired by a system invented by Charles Barbier, Braille’s new method was more compact and lent itself to a range of uses, including music. He presented his work to his peers for the first time in 1824, when he was fifteen years old.
Alexander Graham Bell is a hero because he invented a telephone which was very useful. Ferdinand is my hero because he is kind to me.

Amy Johnson was born in Hull in 1903.

She died on the 5 of January 1941.
Amy flew to Australia in a Gipsy Moth plane, which she named Jason.
During the second World War,Amy helped the Royal Air Force by flying planes around the country.
In 2016,giant sculptures of brightly coloured moths were hung on the walls of building to run how to celebrate Amy’s life.
