In our Religious Education lessons, we have been learning about the local church and the different books that we use to deepen our faith. We know that the Bible is the most important book for Christians and that it is important that we treat it with reverence. We started our new topic by beginning to understand the difference between the Old and the New Testament. We thought about our favourite Bible stories and we began to explain why these were important to us. We then used water colours to create our own interpretations of these stories, such as the Creation Story, Jonah and the Whale and the Annunciation. We thought about why these stories are so important and considered what they can teach us about our relationship with God.
Recently, we have been learning about the four Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. We learned about some of the differences between the Gospels and learned about the way in which we respond to the readings of them in Mass. We now know that we make the sign of the cross on our forehead, lips and heart to remind us that we should think, speak and love the word of God.
We have studied the story of Jesus’ Baptism, which comes from the Gospel of Matthew. We discussed why John may have felt nervous or confused about Jesus’ request to baptise him, and the fact that Jesus wanted to make sure that he did as God required, or asked of him. We discussed the importance of water during baptism, as a sign of purity and new life and we know that Jesus set an example for us to follow.
As a way of furthering our understanding of this Gospel story, we looked at an artistic version of Jesus’ Baptism and discussed the different colours that were used and what they might represent. We said that the white represents purity, and we can also see some blues which highlight the importance of the water during the sacrament of baptism. We used oil pastels to create our own versions of this art, with Jesus in the centre and the holy dove above him.
We hope that you like our artwork!
