In Music with Mr Hylton, Year 6 have been learning how to play various percussion instruments as well as creating drumming patterns.
As our History topic is ‘The Kingdom of Benin’, this term’s focus has been Djembe Drumming. You can watch us drumming in our Kingdom of Benin assembly earlier this term: Year 6 Assembly
A djembe is a drum originally from West Africa. The name of the djembe is said to come from the saying “Anke djé, anke bé” which translates to “everyone gather together in peace”. As the djembe drum first began being using in circa 1200 AD, these might have been played by the people in the Kingdom of Benin.
Year 6 are really enjoying working together to develop their percussion skills, following, copying and creating various very challenging African drumming rhythms, using the djembes and a variety of percussion instruments.
I’m really enjoying our drumming lessons and it sounds great! We’re incorporating different instruments such as cowbells, tambourines and other percussion instruments and we’re layering different rhythms!🥁🎶🎵

The drumming was LOUD but over all it was great. The cowbells and the tambourines made the music fit in so nicely.
Our music lessons are really fun. I really enjoyed drumming the different rhythms and hearing the different instruments being put into the music.
I liked this drumming lesson, even though it was loud.
The drumming was really fun and I hope that we can perform what we’ve done after we’ve learnt the rhythm.
