Our next topic in Year 2 will be a brand new topic! We will be learning all about food and farming in the UK.

Farming has been practiced for thousands of years across the British Isles, and we will be learning all about the different types of farming that take place here in the UK. We will learn about plants that are grown, the foods that they produce, and we will also be thinking about the types of farms that keep and raise animals. We will be developing lots of our geographical skills throughout this topic, as we will look at weather patterns in the UK, thinking about how this influences the food that we produce and buy as a result. We will also be improving and practicing our map skills, as we aim to be able to identify fields and farms on aerial photographs.

We are also really lucky to be taking part in a fantastic Schools to Market project. This will show us the importance of knowing where our food comes from, and we’ll begin to understand how to grow foods, and how to sell them. We will be doing some great activities such as visiting a PYO (pick your own) farm for our ingredients, we will be making chutney and will then be selling it at a nearby Whole Foods shop. We are so excited for this opportunity and can’t wait to begin!

As part of our homework, we will be looking at different ways that we could market out chutney, from labels to decoration. We also need to think about price too!

Throughout our topic, we will be linking back to what we remember from our London topic and will be beginning to compare the differences between farms (rural areas) and cities. We will also be visiting one of our favourite places again, where we can then think about how farms compare to the coast. Where do you think we might be going?

As this is a newer topic for our school, I would love to know all about what you are interested to find out!

Have any of you ever been to a farm? If so, what did you see?

What types of animals might be raised on a farm?

What type of crops or plants do you think are grown?

What would you really like to find out about?

Yes, I have been to a farm. I have seen hens, roosters, turkeys, cows, sheep, donkeys, alpacas, goats, horses, pigs and even rabbits and hamsters. I have even fed the goats and sheep special food in the form of pellets as well as fed cows hay.
I have also seen where they live: hens in coops, pigs in sty’s, horses in stables to name a few.
There were some pear trees, pumpkins, strawberries, apple trees, and more.
I have also seen lots of huge fields when I travel by train to different areas in England. I’ve seen barley fields and wheat fields, and herds of cows and even loads of sheep. I have also seen sheep’s being sheared, and solar panel farms. How do solar panels work?
I think wheat, barley, maize, oats, corn 🌽 are mainly grown in England. Wheat being the main crop grown.
I would like to learn how crops are grown and harvested, what happens when the crops are sent to the mill. I would like to learn about different tractors/ vehicles that are used in farming. I would also be interested to know how crops are grown in a greenhouse, and what is the difference between organic and non organic food products.
I cannot wait to learn more about food and farming.

  3. I went to a farm over Easter. They had new born lambs. They were stamped with ink so that the farmer would know which were his if they went astray. Some were stamped with blue ink and some red because the farmer is colour blind. Last time I’m saw lots of cows. They had an electric fence around them.

Yes, I have been to Odds farm. I saw bunnies, goats, pigs and horses. You can also get cattle, sheep and chickens raised on farm. Nearly all fruits and vegetables can be grown on farm including wheat. For example, you could get strawberries, carrots and potatoes. What I would like to know is how they package different types of meat and produce and send it to the shops.

I visited Odds farm and a city farm in Camden Town. We saw different types of sheep and we got to feed them. After, we got to to bottle feed little lambs. We gave the donkeys some hay. We saw chickens, pigs and piglets and lots of cows. I patted some cute rabbits and some hopped when I did it!
On a farm you can grow different fruits and vegetables such as strawberries, potatoes and carrots.
I am enjoying looking at maps, areal photographs and learning about the life cycle of animals. I always enjoy locating where the animals live.

  8. I enjoyed the planting process because I got to water the plants and take out tough weeds that adults could not even remove. It was so deep in the bottom. I like digging holes for the seeds

I want to say thank you to everyone who helped organise this.

I have been to several farms. There are all great. I saw cows, pigs, ducks, chicken and other animals.

I saw lots of crops including corn, strawberry fields and wheat.

I would like to find out about at what time farmers wake up?

I am going soon to Daylesford farm in Cotswolds for the summer festival.

  10. I have been to a farm before I saw sheep, chickens, pigs, cows and bulls.Calves, chicks, piglets and bullocks. Corn, carrots, beetroot, potatoes, strawberries, rhubarb, broad beans, lettuce, celery and gooseberries. I would like to know more about how they rear animals on farms.

  11. Looks like you had lots of fun. I can’t wait to go on it. I really want to go to that trip.

  12. Is it just animals that live on a farm. or is it just animals.

  13. I really enjoyed this activity so far. I can’t wait to learn more about farming. Some farmers kill animals to have food such as meet, eggs, milk and cheese so the farmers can get money. In farms they can also grow crops like sweetcorn, carrot, broccoli, cucumber, tomatoes and grapes. Farmers also take care of the animals so they can be nice and healthy.

  14. I CAN’T WAIT TO GO
