Today we had a wonderful opportunity to take part in a trial workshop, ‘Discovering Identity: Armour and Printmaking’ at the Wallace Collection. We were introduced to different types and designs of armour, we learned about the history of armour and we were given the opportunity to handle some helmets and breastplates, comparing their weights and designs.
After we handled the different types of armour, we had the chance to explore the gallery and make sketches of the armour on show. We noticed so many different designs on each and learned that people chose designs that revealed something about themselves or was intimidating for the enemy.
The second part of the workshop involved printing our own designs onto a breastplate. We had to think about what we wanted our breastplate to say about us, how we identify ourselves and how we can demonstrate our identity. We ended up with a wide variety of ideas and we created some fantastic breastplates personal to each of us!
