Year 6’s Geography unit this term is all about the United Kingdom.
So far we have looked at the different countries that make up the United Kingdom, and how they have different cultures and traditions despite all being part of the United Kingdom. We also looked at the political structure in each country and the different parliament buildings.
Last week, we looked at some of the physical geographical features in each country, including the highest mountain. We then had to use an atlas to plot a route for the Three Peaks Challenge. This is a challenge to walk up the highest peaks in England, Wales and Scotland in just 24 hours! We had to map out the route, starting in London, and going to Snowdonia, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis. We then had to work out the distance we would have travelled, using the scale on the map, and how long the journey would take us. You’ve got to be able to walk quickly and have no traffic on the roads, but you can do it in 24 hours!
Today we started looking at the geographical differences and similarities in different regions of the UK, for example the climate, soil, topography and land use. We used atlases to help us compare the different regions and then matched this to the different crops or animals that are farmed across the UK. We had a discussion about jobs that people would have in villages compared to in cities and how countries trade goods with others, including the foods we export and import.
I am really enjoying our topic about the UK so far.I learnt that is made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and Great Britain is made up of Wales,England and Scotland.Thank you to all the teachers who are teaching us the topic.
It was really fun and now I know a lot about the UK.
I’m really enjoying this topic and it was really interesting to find out what factors effect different industries. It was also fun to work out how long it would take to drive the three peaks, it was fascinating to see how the populations and speed limits in different areas contributed to the final result! This also used our maths skills!!
