Today we had a special Mini First Aid workshop with Martin to continue on our first aid journey which we have been on for the past few years.

We recapped that First aid is and lots of us remembered that this is treating something when we’re poorly or injured.

At school we deal with first aid for things like cuts, bumps and grazes but there are other incidents that may happen so it’s important to be aware of what we can do in these situations!

The first part of first aid is an assessment of our surroundings and the environment we are in. We looked at the acronym DRABC-danger, response, airway, breathing and circulation. This is called an initial primary survey and it is how we can assess someone who injured or poorly and work out the best way of helping them.

We re-called how to check airways and breathing and then how to perform CPR on someone who is unconscious and not breathing while we are waiting for help from a paramedic. This can be done through rescue breaths and chest compressions. It begins with 5 rescue breaths and 30 chest compressions and then a cycle of 2 rescue breaths and 30 compressions afterwards.

Martin also taught us serious cuts and learnt that there are 3 types of bleed: arterial, venus and capillary bleeds. Arterial are the most dangerous and capillary bleeds are the most common. Arterial and venous bleeds need to be treated with a bandage and we practiced applying pressure and bandages to each other’s ‘injuries’ to learn how to stop bleeding from more serious cuts.

At at the end we all received a first aid certificate for all of our hard work!

Thank you to Martin who came to teach us these life saving skills to us and to the SVPA for funding this vital workshop! We are so grateful to you…

What did you learn about first aid during our workshop today?
