In Geography, we have been studying all about food and farming. We have focused on the different features that you might see on a farm, such as a farmhouse, lush-green fields and big barns. We have previously learnt all about London when we studied the Great Fire of London, and London landmarks. We looked in detail about the different things that we might see in a city, from skyscrapers to hundreds of vehicles from buses to electric cars. When we were in Year 1, we learnt about the seaside and we have further consolidated this understanding when we learnt more about the features of the coast before after trip to Broadstairs.
For our work on Broadstairs, we looked at aerial photographs to be able to identify the features that we had learned about and we also studied a map of the area. We noticed that there were lots of symbols which are used to keep the map tidy and so that people know where to go! The maps that we drew were very different, as they were from one point of view, rather than aerial.
This week, we worked in groups to try to recreate these different geographical locations. We had to think hard about the different features or things that we might see at these places. We worked hard to try to recreate helicopters, Big Ben and Tower Bridge, prisons, barns, chicken coops, cliffs, and the beach! We then shared with one another, what we had made and why. At the end of our making time, we had a think about what was different about these creations.
As we have been learning about the difference between human and physical geographical features, we were challenged whilst discussing our creations with deciding whether parts were human or physical. We know that lots of London is man-made, especially the buildings and bridges but we know that the River Thames is a physical feature of our wonderful city.
We really enjoyed being able to be creative with the Lego, and we were able to work really well with our groups, to create effective and informative pieces which reflected the area that we had studied.
