To supplement our topic of Anglo Saxons and Vikings this term, we have started reading Viking Boy by Tony Bradman. It is a thrilling adventure story set in a Viking village and we will use this book to inspire our own pieces of writing over the coming weeks. The story begins with a tense visit to Gunnar’s village by a group of warriors on horseback, who want to warn Gunnar’s father (the local chieftain) about a group of raiders burning and looting local settlements. Already we have a wonderful opportunity to write informally about events from Gunnar’s perspective focusing particularly on Gunnar’s thoughts, feelings and reactions to events. In the coming chapters, we’ll find out who the warriors warning Gunnar’s father really are and we’ll explore different characters’ perspectives and how we ‘show not tell’ the characters’ feelings. Viking Boy is an exciting book and I’m really looking forward to exploring it in more depth over the coming weeks!
I feel like I read that book before… hmm 🤔
