Reception’s current topic is Celebrations Around the World. Reception have been busy learning about different celebrations including Diwali, Chinese New Year and Carnival in Brazil.
To enhance our learning about these celebrations, we invited some parents who are part of our school family to come in and share their experiences of these celebrations with us.
Diwali
During our learning about Diwali, the festival of light, we welcomed Sal into school.
Sal celebrates the festival of Diwali with her family and she shared lots of her knowledge about the festival and some of the traditions her family do each year. Sal brought in some special objects for us to look at including diva lamps, Rangoli patterns, special jewellery and showed us some photos and videos of her family celebrating Diwali. Sal read a very interesting story about a family getting ready for Diwali and how they enjoy celebrating.
Chinese New Year
During our learning about Chinese New Year, we welcomed Fiona into school.
Fiona celebrates Chinese New Year with her family every year. Fiona read a story about a family getting ready for Chinese New Year. She told us about how the family clean their house and put up red decorations. Fiona gave each of us a red envelope with something special inside… a sticker! The red envelopes bring good luck to everyone. Fiona told us about all of the delicious food dishes that people eat during this special celebration.
Many thanks to Sal and Fiona for sharing their experiences with us… it was a wonderful way to build on what we have been learning about in class and a good opportunity to ask lots of questions!
Learning about different festivals sounds like a lot of fun. I like your good luck red envelopes.
I liked the red envelopes that the visitor gave me. I liked the things she showed me and the visitor was wonderful!
Thank you for coming and for explaining the Chinese new year to us!
I liked seeing people to come to our class. Thank you Sal for sharing your culture with us.
