This week we began our new Science topic: rocks!
In this lesson we thought carefully about what we already know about rocks and stone-such as what it is used for, where it comes from and how it is different from other materials.
We learn that there are three different types of rock called igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. Igneous rock is made when magma that comes from under the Earth’s surface erupts through volcanoes and cools. Sedimentary rock is formed when tiny pieces of igneous rock are compressed under the Earth or sea bed. Metamorphic rock is formed when there are changes in heat and pressure under the Earth’s surface.
Year 3 then became rock detectives and spent time observing different types of rocks such as marble, slate, limestone, granite, sandstone and gabbro. We thought about their properties such as their colour, whether they has crystals, their texture, strength and weight. The magnifying lenses we used really helped us to spot more details such as tiny holes and pits in the rocks. Afterwards we spent time sketching the rocks, describing their texture, colour and appearance. We then research their uses, for example marble is often used for kitchen worktops and bathroom times where as limestone is used to make cement and in the building of roads.
What did you learn about rocks this week?
I learnt that there are 3 types of rocks which are: Igneous rocks, Sedimentary rocks and Metamorphic rocks.
I also found it very interesting how these rocks are formed. Being a rock detective was real fun.
I am looking forward to learning more in this topic. βΊοΈ
I liked learning what the different rocks where used for: like limestone is used for roads. I liked learning the different kinds of rocks (metamorphic, sedimentary and ingenious).
Great work year 3!π I hope you enjoyed this as much as I did in year 3!
I learnt that all rocks are all unique and have a different pattern and shape, I also learnt that there are different kinds of rocks like metamorphic, sedimentary and ingenious.β
I learnt three different types of rocks , they are igneous , sedimentary and metamorphic. It was very fun and we looked at sandstone , limestone and slate. Thank you Mr kersys for this amazing opportunity to look at these fascinating rocks!
I really liked identifying rocks it was very fun ! My favourite rock was the marble because it was white and shiny and it was very cool ! I am very exited to know more !
When we began our rock topic I liked finding out the colour of all the rocks and what they were used for.
I learnt about the rocks that are sedimentary , ignoeus and metamorphic.
