This week in Year 1 we have been learning how to partition numbers into tens and ones!
This has been a very tricky concept to understand, but Year 1 have worked so hard during each maths lesson. We have been focusing on counting in tens, and using a part-part-whole model to partition numbers. As the values of tens and ones are so important to know, especially for Year 2 maths next year, we have taken our time to delve deeper into this concept to ensure a thorough understanding.
To further grasp the concept of tens and ones in numbers to 50, we used ten sticks and one cubes to visualise the numbers. Each table was given 5 ten sticks per pair and 9 ones cubes and as a class we worked through a variety of different numbers. Working together in pairs, the children would use their resources to demonstrate a number physically, then count in tens and then ones to ensure they had the right number.
Working through the task it was great practice for the children to write a number between 10 and 50, draw it into ten sticks and one cubes, then count each partition to see how many tens and ones are in the number. This was a challenge for the class to understand, as it is many different things to think and work out at the same time! However, through working together and using the resources with their partner, the class were able to see how to partition into tens and ones. We will continue to work on this with numbers to 50!
Well done Year 1, keep practicing counting in tens and writing your numbers to 50!
I enjoyed practicing counting in tens and drawing the sticks and cubes 🙂
l like your topic it looks super fun to learn about in year 1 l learned about that too !!!
It was a little tricky but I enjoyed learning about tens and ones.
Good maths skills Year 1 !
