This term, our Science topic is materials. To begin the new topic, we have explored what happens when a soluble material mixes with water. We tested numerous materials (both soluble and insoluble): sand, salt, sugar, coffee, cornflour, rice, gravy, chalk and washing powder. We mixed the materials with water and observed what happened. The materials which dissolved appeared to disappear but we realised that they hadn’t disappeared at all – they had formed a solution.
This investigation led us to ask ourselves what else we’d like to find out about soluble materials and we decided to investigate the following questions:
- Does the amount of water affect how quickly sugar dissolves in water?
- Does the temperature of the water affect how quickly the sugar dissolves in water?
- Does the number of stirs affect how quickly the sugar dissolves in water?
- Does the amount of sugar affect how quickly the sugar dissolves in water?
We divided into small groups to investigate different questions and we shared our results. The question is though, what did we find out?
I hope that all of you are having fun!!!
ENJOY!!!
