This week in English, we have been continuing our class text which is Shackleton’s Journey. It tells the story of Ernest Shackleton and his expedition to explore the vast icy area of Antarctica aboard the Endurance. We have been looking at the crew and what jobs they did and also looking at the journey the Endurance planned to take.
Unfortunately, Shackleton and his crew got stuck in pack ice resulting in the sinking of the Endurance and they had to survive using various different methods such as turning boats upside down to create a shelter to protect themselves from the bitterly cold conditions and also hosting dog sledging races to keep spirits up within the camp. Shackleton eventually went out on a rescue mission which resulted in him successfully saving every single member of his crew.
We held a mini press conference to interview the different members of the crew to find out their experiences. To do this, we planned questions that we would like to ask the crew about their experiences, especially after being in Antarctica for so long. In pairs, we took turns to be the interviewer and interviewee. We also worked on note-taking during the interview to help us get quick information which helped us to write a more detailed interview report!
Well done Year 4 on your wonderful questions and on hosting our mini-press conferences!
