This term in Design and Technology our topic was Cooking and Nutrition: Seasonal Tarts and we had lots of fun completing this project!
At the start of the week we learnt about the different climate zones around the world such as temperate, tropical, arid, polar and mediterranean. We used atlases to find the countries and climate zones that different fruits and vegetables that are commonly eaten in the UK are grown in. Year 3 also learnt that because the UK has a temperate climate, meaningΒ that we have 4 distinct seasons with changing temperatures in each one, lots of food can not grow all year round. For example, strawberries only grow in later spring and early summer which means they do not grow in winter. However, we can find strawberries in the supermarkets all year round! This is because food that can not be grown in each season is imported due to demand. We discussed the positives and negatives of importing food and the impact this can have on the environment. Eating seasonally means eating fruits and vegetables that are grown in the season we are in and this would become the theme of our seasonal tarts.
On Tuesday Year 3 created a seasonal food wheel with examples of produce that grows in each season in the UK. We would use vegetables that can grow in the UK in the spring time for our tarts.Β
On Friday it was time to get cooking! First we washed our hands, tied our hair back and put our aprons on to be as hygienic as possible which is very important when preparing and handling food. Everyone had lots of fun spreading tomato puree on our pastry bases and selecting and cutting the vegetables into small pieces for them to cook evenly. We thought about which colour combinations to use and had to include 4 different seasonal vegetables on our tarts. There were lots of choices: asparagus, aubergine, courgette, radish, broccoli, pepper and baby plum tomatoes! When we had finished we added different toppings to our tarts such as basil, cheddar cheese, olive oil or mixed herbs. Then it was time for the tarts to bake while we cleaned up the creativity room!
Once all of the tarts were cooked, we were able to taste and evaluate them thinking carefully about what went well and how well the flavour combinations worked as well as how appealing they looked and what we would do differently next time.
What did you enjoy learning about during our D.T. project?
The tarts look lovely and this activity was so much fun! Thanks to our teachers for organising this wonderful event.

This activity was so fun!!! I found the vegetarian tarts so tasty. I liked it so much that I asked my mum to prepare it for dinner. πππ
My favourite part was chopping the vegetables.
Thank you to all my teachers for organising this D.T. project.

I liked making the tarts. I enjoyed learning about how you make a tart and that you should eat seasonally because importing food is bad for the environment.
