This term, we’ve been inspired by Frida Khalo to create our own self portraits. We began by studying and analysing Frida Khalo’s career and her Art. We discovered that her self portraits reflected her moods and feelings, and communicated messages about her identity.
In order to use paint in our portraits, we learned how to create tones of different colours and we incorporated these tones into the backwash and the leaves (Frida Khalo’s portraits often include nature to communicate her passion for wildlife).
Our next job was to create our portraits and we learned how to space the physical features of our face by marking very lightly the location of the eyes, nose and mouth first. Once we had lightly sketched the size of each of the features, we used photographs of ourselves to decide how to draw the features.
Once we had our self portraits, it was time to add the backwash (mood depicting), nature, the portrait and any other additions which communicate our identity in whichever we way we chose. The end results have been fantastic!
