In this week’s Shared Reading lesson Year 3 have been looking at Robert Browning’s version of ‘The Pied Piper of Hamelin’.
Together, we read the first 3 stanzas of the poem and discussed the meanings of words such as ‘ditty’, ‘corporation’ and ‘quaked’ to better understand the narrative plot of the poem. We focused in closed on stanza 2, where we are told about all the mischief the rats get up to in Hamelin.
Year 3 worked hard to record all these things and create a Rats’ Mischief Map using drawings and quotes from the poem.
The next task was to answer some comprehension questions about the meaning of words in context including why the Mayor of Hamelin and his government are described as a ‘noddy’ and ‘dolts’!
