Over the past week Year 4 have been revisiting Geometry in terms of looking at different polygons and understanding lines of symmetry.
We had to firstly remember that a polygon is a flat 2D shape with straight sides. Our first lesson was about understanding the difference between a regular and irregular shape. A regular shape has all equal sides as well as all the interior angles also being equal whereas an irregular shape has sides that are different lengths and different interior angles. We had to work together to identify the regular and irregular shapes by looking at the sides and angles to check. We then had to identify the shapes but the number of sides it had such as six sided shape being a hexagon.
Later on in the week, we had to use polygon resources in order to see if we could create new shapes by combining two polygons. We had a challenge to see if we could manage to make our new shapes only have a certain amount of sides. This took lots of trial and error as well as learning from our mistakes which really helped us to build our preservice in looking for different solutions when dealing with problems in maths.
Our last lessons were all about lines of symmetry and seeing if we could understand how many lines of symmetry, a shape may have. We explored this by using resources to build shapes and see if the mirror image would be the same on both sides. Our challenge was to use a paper square and see how many lines of symmetry it has by folding it. Again this was tricky but we managed to get there in the end.
