Since the beginning of the year, we have been reading ‘The First Drawing’ by Mordicai Gerstein. We have been writing from the first person perspective of the main character, the young boy who creates the first ever drawing.

This week, we particularly focused on the scene where the the first drawing is created by the boy on the cave wall in front his family’s eyes. We analysed the facial expressions in the illustrations and discussed the actions in the text: the children clutching onto the legs of their parents and the father aiming his spear at the drawing.

With discussion, we came to realise that the reactions of the characters would be different to our reactions today because they were seeing a drawing for the first time in their lives. The reactions would also be different from each other because we all have different personalities which determine how we respond to situations. We came up with exclamations and questions the characters might express in the moment and created freeze frames to demonstrate what the reactions might look like.

Once we had used our imaginations to enact the scene, we came up with possible sentences the family members might use if they were describing the events in the cave. By using adjectives and adverbs to start our sentences, we managed to incorporate both feelings and reactions into our ideas. We came up with some very creative and inventive ideas, which will support our writing next week when we describe the events from the perspective of one of the family members in our extended writing.
